Hello all,

Thought I would put on a little range report here, since I have gotten so much help here in the past. from bench at 100 meters. 15-20k winds mostly at back and slightly from left, 0 degrees C, mostly sunny.

Rifle: Savage Edge, 223 rem, scope with Tasco 6-24x42, harris bipod.

Best loads: R-P new brass, Hornady 50gr V-max, 26.5gr Hogdon Benchmark, COAL: 2.346" produced consistent groups at .474" measured at outside of bullet holes. and this from a $300 rifle WOOFTA :eek:

Best Cast Load so far: this was my first attempt at shooting cast from a 223, usually do larger caliber rifles. new R-P brass, Lyman 225415, 55gr. alloy used is 2lb w/w, 1 lb pure Pb, 100gr 50/50 for the tin and about 300gr Linotype. water quenched from mold gave about 16 BHN on my LEE tester. Sized to .225 with Hornady GC and LLA. Only aged a day before I shot them, just had to go shoot 'em up.

Best load was with 10.7gr IMR4198 which gave .957" groups, next best was 1.06" using 11.5gr of Rx7.

All loads were over CCI400 primers.

These loads were safe from my rifle and showed no signs of overpressure. My cast loads were minimum loads and the V-max loads had been worked up to max or near max. WORK UP YOUR OWN LOADS USING CREDIBLE LOAD BOOKS. (had to throw that in just in case)

Great work! I'll be taking my new Savage 25 in .223 to the range, hopefully this week, and I've got three ladders tests ready with Hornady V-Max 60gr, with Varget. I'll branch out into new bullets and powder after this test (I want to see how heavy and how light I can stabilize, first at 100 yards, then a new test at 300-400.)
 
I tried Varget too, but couldnt get great results, also tried 4198imr. This was only at 100, but most of my shots will be within 150 or so, I'd like to make it to a longer range sometime, just to try it out. I havnt tried heavier than 50 gr so far. I'm happy with these results and 50gr moving at 3500fps + will do more than enough damage on these little buggers for my purposes. Plus I have never seen 60gr vmax at our store, just 50 and 40 so far for vmax
 
I have had impressive results in cast 223 using BL-c2 powder.

on your next cast try straight WW without the pure lead.
you may find you will be able to push them a bit faster and accuracy will keep on the end range of the scale.

ok thanks phishroy....ya that was my first go at it, now try to get them faster...I may have to cut the pure lead like ya say. I may also try some heat treating and then quench again. I am also going to venture and try paper patch 223....I dontknow if it will work or not, but worth a try. I've had success with 7.62x54 and 303brit. now for the 8mm and the 223. I'd rather not have to use gc's as they are difficult to come by here and expensive. tracing paper is much cheaper hahaha..

That was going for $399+tax at Le Baron, I really want to get my hands on one as well in .223, great to know it's a really nice rifle. It would be my first of its kind, and it fits the budget perfectly.
 
ya mine was $406 delivered I believe, thats from Frontier Firearms. I put a different scope on it, tasco 6-24x42 mildot. I am very happy with it. Shoots factory ammo pretty decent, but I prefer to load my own. I found the cheap win white box ok, but better with a Lee factory crimp added to it.
