Axe or machete?

If you can't take a full size axe with you then a small one is a must.
Imho if you are planning to leave the provincial park campsite you need an axe and are fool not to have one. A diamond coated file should be attached to the sheath as well.

Why? I guess I'm a fool. On a backpacking trip every ounce counts. Kindling can be gathered from twigs off deadfalls, moss or if necessary sticks can be feathered with a light knife. Enough branches, bark etc. can be gathered for fuel or building a shelter but for that matter I'd rather take a light tent or fly.

The largest of game can be boned out with just a sharp knife. I was given one of those Gerber pack saws but I have yet needed to use it.

I think that alternating axe and machete is perfect for tree defense....

I just had an undesirable coffee/nose/keyboard interaction... :D

Axe. Hatchet if nothing else - be very carefull with it, it's easy to hurt yourself pretty bad if you're careless.

I've found a small folding saw such as the 'whatasaw' to be quite effective, and lighter than an axe, for work around the campfire. it'a bit noisy folded, but that can be cured with a small piece of cardboard around the blade.
Not much use for splitting a mooses spine though.

Yah but in Victoria little Elves walk through the forest at night and set up all those little piles. :D
Get into some real woods and trust me you will wish you had at the least an Axe and file.

Yeah, we have it pretty soft here in BC. If caught out in the woods at night we just snuggle up under some palm leaves and suck on a fresh coconut until the song of wild canaries awakens us a dawn.

i agree a saw is the best buck make a nice one that look like an oversize folder knife you will be amazed at how better than a axe it is

Axe for sure, saw next, folding or otherwise , a machete could be handy , hatchet's are last on my list . If you slip with an axe spliting wood you have a foot injury , If wearing steel toes possibly only a damaged boot, hatchet's are about the right length to get yourself in the knee, not cool in the bush. My $.02 worth

Laf, damn near close :D Our south coast here in BC is one of the only places you can actually grow a palm tree outdoors in Canada. :p

Homes are being sold up here in Lake Cowichan as "Canada's Mediterranean".

Mind you I have Lemon trees outside...wraped against frost during winter, and that is all they need here.

I digress...
I'm thinking of getting one of the Cold steel Kukris from this place...price is right. :beerchug:

A folding saw, one with a blade big enough to cut a 4-6 in tree. A saw is much quieter than an axe. It can also be used to butcher and cut the antlers out of an animal and do a very nice job.

I carry a folding saw, cuts quick, is lighter and quieter and safer to use than an axe or machete IMO.

If we need to do alot of cutting we use a chainsaw.

I just got the Ontario Survival Machete from swords.ca.... I was very impressed, it chopped a one foot piece of 2x4 into kindling, it is strong and can be used for digging, prying, sawing and many other outdoor tasks . It will be with me when ever I venture into the woods.

Excellent service from swords.ca by the way, shipped the same day I ordered!

My vote goes for the machete I think the blade is simply an extension of your arm and is safer and easier to control. My $.02
