Axis 2 or hog hunter

Hog hunter: heavier, short medium weight threaded barrel, larger bolt handle, fixed magazine, open sites, cheap stock, accutrigger, more expensive.

Axis II: lighter, longer sporter barrel, detachable magazine, no open sights, cheap scope, cheap stock, accutrigger, less expense and now offering a rebate.

On paper I would think the difference makers would be price and if he plans to shoot with open sights. But he'll probably buy the one he likes.

In store the Hog hunter reminded me of the old jungle carbines, hefty and solid.
If you miss the charging hog/critter you could probably club it to death with the rifle lol.

Things I liked:
.308
No detachable mag to worry about.
Iron sights.
Nice big bolt handle.
Heavy barrel.
Not an axis. ;)

Hog hunter is too heavy for me to even imagine lugging around much.

Axis is really not even on my radar since the Ruger American came out.

Ruger American Compact is the best of both worlds!!! You can thank me later. ;)

:agree:
One of these is totally on my wish list.

Thanks guys,

I know my buddy was looking into eventually putting this into an MDT LSS stock (which MDT is currently making the LSS for the Axis). Saying that, my recommendation to him was to go with the hog hunter. From what i know, the biggest downside to that gun is the cheap stock but since he plans to swap it out eventually, that seems like a moot point.

Not much of feedback for the Hog Hunter here on CGN. Just like your buddy, I'm planning to drop that rifle into a LSS chassis. Being short and hefty with a collapsible buttstock it makes it a very good survival and medium range SHTF rifle. Adding a few 10 rounders and I think I'll be very happy.

The Savage Hog hunter doesn't use detachable mags. ;)

The more I look into these for my buddy, the more I want one! I've got a few hundred bucks sitting around now, so I might have to pick up an axis 2. Boyds now ships the tacticool (now called varmint pro) so I think it could make a cheap little target gun in .223. I kind of want a 308 but I think I will hold off for a nice higher end built on that one. A little 223 should do in the mean time. I love wasting money!
