axis 223 wont remove spent cartridge

check to see that the extractor is moving freely on the bolt head, it might need a light touch of grease......
 
weak extractor spring and undersized detent ball...........its a easy fix and a typical savage issue.

remove the extractor, best way to do this is in a ziplock back so you don't lose the pieces.....stretch the spring a little bit and get yourself a 3.5mm stainless ball bearing to replace the factory detent ball, light oil the extractor and reassemble the bolthead and try it again.
 
Is the bolt face the right size?
A 22-250 has a larger bolt face than a 223 has.
If you have the bolt from a 308 or a 22-250 it won't pick up a 223 case.
Remove the bolt and put a spent case in the bolt to see how much play you have.
 
Probably a dirty chamber. Heat and pressure from firing mixed with old grease/oil make a bad combination.

EDIT- Nevermind. Perhaps store the bolt in the gun it belongs too? I dont really see any reason for storing it removed
 
I think there are good reasons for storing you're rifle with the bolt removed. Don't need a trigger lock with the bolt locked in the ammo can. One key, you're gun and ammo are ready to go. Not trying to stir the pot, just something to think about. You hear about the people who can't remember where they put the bolt... it's in the ammo can.

There's even some real crazy gun owners out there that store guns in a safe or lockable cabinet with the bolt in and no trigger lock. :eek:
