Having read all the axis bashing, I decided to buy my own in .223 and check it out. Well, was I suprised. Slopply action, heavy trigger, but a great shooter. After the initial test firing, I epoxied 2 metal rods into the forend, and sanded a fair bit off the trigger spring. I also threw on a Bushnell 4200 8-24X40mm. Here's the range report:

55gr. Hornady SP over 23.5gr of IMR 4320

I think that I'm the limiting factor not the rifle.

I was all set to buy one, but the stock just didn't feel right to me, I do plan on buying the next one up in .223

If its doesn't cost you $5,000.00 or more its junk...or so seems to be the "norm" here on CGN.
No it does not. I've got an older 788 in .308. It shoots just as well as the above pictures with factory ammunition. An inexpensive deer rifle. I also have another 788 in .222, again no mods, factory barrel & trigger. It easily meets my requirement of a 1/2 MOA varmint rifle. Another inexpensive rifle.

I just picked mine up this afternoon, got the Axis kit that comes with the bushnell scope, also in .223, i'm excited to go give it a try. I havn't taken it apart yet, but I was wondering if next time you had yours appart you could snap a pic of the metal rods you've inserted to stiffen up the forend.

What purpose exactly did you buy the 'iron/pipe' for?

I'm getting 7-08mm Axis for my daughter. Elk, deer, moose or blackie... 3-9x40 Nikon scope.

I'd be interested in seeing a picture of this as well as I have a project rifle of another type that is suffering from being put in a plastic Ramline stock.

Oh I know a gun doesn't need to cost an arm and a leg to shoot good...its the large majority of others that need to learn/admit that.

I added the metal rods because the forensic was really flexy from the sling swivel forward. I plan on using a bipod and I was concerned that the barrel would not stay free floated. I'll try to take some pics, but what I did was use a utility knive / chisel to remove the little tables that run crosswise in the forend. Then I took 2 1/4 in steel rods (rounds) and cut them to length. I wedged them in the bottom of the forend after coating with epoxy, then I covered it all with more epoxy. Not Pretty inside, but the stock has much less flex now.

Guess again!

There have been lots of threads over the years extolling the virtues of rifles less than $5K with lots of positive feedback from the members here. The Savages, Stevens, Marlins, & Tradex are just a few to mention.

Maybe if you'd been here more than a grand total of one month, [and becoming an expert] you'd know this.

Shoots good, but a sloppy action, doesn't seem like that good of a deal to me. maybe people should start realizing that an $800 rifle is not expensive, especially if you keep it for 20 years...;)

The Axis ,111, 11 rifles are no frills rifles that will shot good and get the job done, when asked ,i always approve their choice for a budget minded shooter, hunter, Savage is a good product... JP.
