Axis recoil lug

I've been looking for another rifle for punching paper and an Axis is a maybe but the lawnmower drive key for a recoil lug scares me. I've done some bedding and custom stocks for myself and friends, and always thought solid was important for accuracy, that being said would it be worth trying to epoxy that key permanently into it's slot in the action, then bed the action? I am a welder by trade and understand what welding does to steel and will not consider that as an option anywhere near the chamber because the testing to prove safe would likely cost far more than the gun is worth. Looking for a cheap fix for a low cost rifle.

you would have to check to see if the barrel has enough threads on it to accommodate a recoil lug between the action and the barrel nut, so yes headspace could be a issue.

Headspace - recoil lug HUH ??? RJ

by adding a "regular" recoil lug it would set the barrel / chamber forward the thickness of the lug, the shoulder on the barrel would need to be cut back accordingly

the axis recoil lug is basically a little metal tab that sits in a slot in the stock, and a slot on the bottom of the action, a "regular" recoil lug gets pinched between action and barrel shoulder

it's a savage........has a barrel nut and no shoulder or tenon so nothing to cut back accordingly, the barrel nut would have to screw onto the barrel the thickness of the recoil lug without running out of thread.
