B&t apc 223 pic thread-range report page 4

But Abby is so far, and I like the folks at PoCo. I do most of my shooting on the unsupervised ranges, anyway, since I mainly shoot pistol/poodleshooter cartridges. I get a bit of a kick out of seeing new shooters shoot, too. Call me a voyeur.

Regarding the heat treated finish marks, now that it seems to be a standard procedure for the batch I'm pretty sure there is a practical reason and Wolverine will be confirming, I have no doubt we will come out more educated.

Thanks for your email, no worries- our demo model APC had the same discoloured spot straight on the bolt carrier from factory as well. It is indeed from spot-heat treating at the factory and will not hurt performance at all- it’s deliberately done. The camming surface in the bolt carrier is milled while the metal is still un-treated, then the camming track and the front face of the bolt carrier are spot heat treated to harden them after the fact.

Why exactly B&T did the heat treating after the fact, I’m not sure, but it should not cause any issues with function at all. Please see the photo below of our shop-demo APC and you’ll see the same discoloured spot on the carrier

Got a reply from Evan

heres my group at 100 from today's trip. 45 rounds on the same point of aim with an ACOG and heated up barrel to get a practical accuracy average. it wasnt a one shot a minute precision shoot but i did take my time between shoots. results seem comparable to my swiss.

i need to adjust my scope up and left, majority seem to be around 2~in/sq

A 5 1/2" group at 100m is Tavor territory and pretty bad in my opinion. I'm guessing you have the donut on your ACOG and that chin weld isn't doing you any favours.

Agreed, 100%. No slight against the shooter, who was likely struggling with optical limitations or (as stated) the cheek-weld or lack thereof. However, if that is the performance of the Lothar-Walther Match NR barrel? Then I hate to think how my incoming Restricted shorty carbine is going to perform in the accuracy department. Hopefully Mikethebike will come up with better results using his optics set-up and a jury-rigged cheek-rest! C;mon Mike - show us what the NR rifle is capable of....

Keep in mind that was just me resting the front end on a sand bag with cheap 55g ammo, and the whole thing took around 5 min. like I said, I wasn't going for fleas #### accuracy. I know your not commenting on my shooting (I'm lucky I hit the paper) but I just didn't go into it with that mindset, or I would have bench rested the stock and taken way more time makeing some 5 round groups. Next outing it's going up against the Swiss arms. Then I'll start makeing some statements.

As the B&T is my first NR black rifle (but far from my first rifle) I am curious as to the barrel break in procedure that is being used. I plan to break mine in like I would any match barrel. Also maybe I am crazy but groups that are shot with holo sights/Acogs with no cheek weld hardly seem like a fair judgment of accuracy of the rifle? Any ways I look forward to getting mine into the vise on the milking machine as soon as it arrives and adding my custom made cheek riser.

barrel break in is a myth

barrel break in is a myth

Not entirely, it depends on how the barrel was made. If your barrel is nitrided or chrome lined then no break in required but some barrels will benefit from a proper break in and can pick up a couple hundred fps velocity as they smooth out.
I wouldn't worry about it on a rifle like this. Just take it out and shoot it.

Hi all,
I was just wondering if any other APC 223 owners noticed an issue on the finish near the front side edge of the ejection port. The finish my my rifle seems to be chipped off in two places and I didn't notice this when I purchased it... Does anyone else have the same issue by chance? Not sure if there is anything I can do. Just really hurts to notice this on a brand new, unfired $4000 rifle...:( Thanks.

yeah mine was the same, my guess is thats where they were hung from when anodized. i saw it and didnt care, its aluminum and its the ejection port, wont corrode and its going to get beaten anyway. but yes on a 4k rifle, eek! seeming like we got the alpha batch. is that rust on your torx screw?:p wait till you get a load of the cam pin track and piston strike face, yeah thats normal too we all have it.

Thanks for the reply and photo :). Yeah I guess you are right it would make sense regarding the hanging. And yeah I did see your post about the bolt carrier in this thread and mine is exactly the same... It's a bit odd though because I've seen some pictures of the bolt carrier from US imported versions and it looks like the heat treatment happened before the finishing on those versions. Wonder why ours ended up the opposite way. Regardless I'll get over it one I get some wear on it I suppose, I can't wait to try it out. It'll be interesting to see if the next batch changes at all.

I have that visual imperfection at the ejection port. Don't care. Sure, it's an expensive rifle, but it functions fine, and you don't notice it if you spend more time shooting than finger-banging your safe queen.

Hey - anyone who has a brake want to trade for Flash hider?

I just bought an APC with the FH, but I really want a brake. :) Given the crazy thread pitch, this might be my only option. :)
