Well, I spent 4 days in Peace River country [NE BC] looking for a legal bull moose and Whitetail deer.
Unfortunately, the moose did not co-operate. Saw plenty of moose, but no legal bulls. [Saw several non-legal ones]
The Whitetail deer were plentiful enough. Since I am a meat hunter, I took one antlerless and one Antlered animal.
We pushed bush to find them....it was fairly quiet with wet leaves on the ground.
I was packing my 325 WSM, more than needed for deer, but was thinking to try it on moose. I load the older Norma
196 grain Dual Core bullet to 2950 fps.
The first deer, the antlerless, showed up at about 45 yards facing straight away,
looking back over its shoulder. I did not want to mess up any meat on a smaller animal, so I did something I often preach against.
I held the crosshairs on its neck at the juncture of the head and squeezed off the shot. The bullet nearly severed the neck,
and completely ruptured the jugular on exit. DRT, of course.
Second deer, a 3 point buck, got caught taking a look at me when he should have been making tracks outta Dodge.
All I could see above the thick willows was his nose, eyes, antlers and the white spot on the neck. Crosshairs on the white spot..
Range was under 50 yards again. DRT on this one as well.
I suspect from the autopsies, that this bullet expands fairly rapidly at
those speeds and short range. Edible meat loss was nil, though, due to necessary shot placement. All looks good. Both nice fat,
grain and alfalfa fed animals.
Still have a muley tag, but will have to hunt elsewhere in BC for that.
A bit of irony....the day after I shot the buck, I saw a monster Whitetail buck in a hunt able location. He just stood there and looked
at me....I think he knew, lol. Dave.
