Just got back from the Savant Lake area (WMU 16B) from a week of hunting.
Weather was not the best for moose hunting... but my dad manageed to take down a young bull on the Monday. No huge trophy, but definitely a good eater.

Weather was warm.... sometimes up to 15 or 16 degrees while out in the bush. It finally cooled down the day we were leaving. Anyone up there for opening weekend for the other area's should have excellent hunting weather... and I wouldn't be suprised if the mercury dipped below freezing at some point and they get a few frosts.

I think the rut is just starting and going into full swing. Sure enough... after we shot our bull we saw four more after that. Lucky for them, we only had one bull tag. One younger bull came out to where my buddy was sitting... and he played with it for about an hour with cow calls and grunts. When he first came out at about 200 yards away, he gave him a soft cow call. This bull started running straight for him and stopped about 50 yards away. He would pull back a bit, and then my friend would call him in a again with a cow call or grunt. Finally bringing him in as close as about 15 yards. The thing was grunting at him non-stop and constantly licking its chops. This went on for almost an hour. He was safely up on a brush pile... but even then a few times the bull got a little too close for comfort. He finally had to scare it away but yelling and waving his seat cushion at it. Only thing that would have been even more amazing would be if he had a video camera with him. We all made sure we had digi-cams in the packs after that. LOL

All in all.... an excellent hunt. Since the rack was not huge on this young bull.. we're going to try to do a european style mount on our own. Any suggestions from anyone?

Take care and good luck in your hunts.

I'll try to get a few pics up in the next couple of days.
I kept forgetting to recharge my camera... so most of the good pics are on my cousins camera.
