And finally for some good news!
The executive of WRAS has met with the executive of the CANADIAN HISTORICAL ARMS SOCIETY (CHAS) and we will be holding matches this season. The first match will be June 27 at the CHAS range. These matches will have some Covid19 measures in place, and as such will probably require more time to shoot. As well, we will be looking for volunteers to assist us in running these matches (RO’s and spotters). Volunteers may be competitors. If you wish to help please email wrasalberta@gmail.com .

We would like to thank the Canadian Historical Arms Society for their support.

Stay tuned for more details.

Location is always helpful in a match announcement.

You’re correct. We are Alberta based, in the Edmonton region. We shoot out of the Canadian Historical Arms Society Range (CHAS) as well as the Edson Fish and Game range (EDFGA).

first time I've heard of WRAS.

WHAT! Hasn't EVERYONE heard of us?.....Just Kidding.

I'm actually pretty glad you posted this, because, it never really occurred to me that A) not everyone has heard of us and B) not everyone knows our story. So with that said, I'll try to give a brief history, and try not to bore all those that read it.

WRAS was founded in the early 2000's maybe even slightly earlier than that, it was long before my time. Initially WRAS operated out of the now closed Spruce Grove Gun Club. It was started by some IPSC shooters exploring, back then, the relatively new sport of "multi gun". WRAS initially was a Multigun club, which morphed into a 3 gun club, as previously it was mostly pistol/shotgun centric.
Fast forward to 2015. The gun club, that had operated for 40 years, found itself a victim of bureaucracy, and was closed by the county. That left WRAS without a range to operate at, as you see, WRAS isn't affiliated with any range. With nowhere to hold 3 gun matches WRAS almost faded out.
In 2016 we heard of this new growing sport of "practical precision shooting". We did some research and decided to make a go of it, since nobody was really doing it in northern Alberta. About the same time the Milo Range was hosting matches put on by a group of excellent dudes who eventually became to be known as the Southern Alberta Precision Rifle League (SAPRL). With some collaboration we now have what we do in Alberta today for Practical precision shooting matches.
WRAS is a not for profit club. Our PRIMARY focus on the development of the sport and the shooting community. We don't do prizes at the matches, bragging rights is all you get. We have had some great vendors donate some items which we give away. We hold matches at the Canadian Historical Arms Society range and the Edson fish and game range. At CHAS we are out to 800 meters and at Edson we can (but haven't yet for a match) go out to 1600m.
WRAS carries it's own insurance, has it's own steel targets and props. If you have a home range that would like to host us we can definitely talk.
Hope that wasn't too boring...

This sounds interesting. Tagged.

What are some equipment requirements/calibres/classes etc? What are some of the match/stage rules?

To come out and give it a go you’ll need a rifle with data out to 800 meters, preferably with a detachable magazine, affixed with a scope with open turrets and/or a ballistic compensating reticle.
As far as other equipment goes there are enough of us who are willing to lend equipment so you can try it out to see what you like. Eg: pump pillows, tripods, wind meters, etc.

We don’t run classifications as of yet so everyone just shoots as ‘open’ for now.

If you hit up YouTube and search ‘precision rifle match’ you’ll get an idea of what our matches are like.

How important is it to have a rifle with a detachable magazine?

Detachable magazines are pretty important, each stage typically has 8 to 12 rounds shot in 90 to 120 seconds from a couple different positions. If you were looking to just try out the sport you could use a rifle with an internal magazine you just have to accept that you'll only be shooting 4 rounds where everyone else is shooting 2 to 3 times as much.

I've seen guys use the butt stock ammo carrier sleeves that hold individual rounds in fabric loops, and reload the fixed magazine that way. I mean, it works, but eats up lots of time and takes you out of your shooting position to do it.

Greetings all,
I hope all of you are safe and well. Due to the current Covid-19 outbreak and the closure of shooting ranges we have made the decision to cancel the May 30 match. We will continue to assess whether we can hold our future matches and communicate that as soon as possible.

Here’s hoping this ends soon.
