Hello CGN fellows,

After a few years out of the shooting, I am coming back to the range. My 10/22 and Lee Enfield are ready to rock again. And I have a brand new (what ever new means) Norinco SKS on it's way from Marstar.

But I have vision issues, my eyes have a hard time to focus using iron sights, this is why all my current rifles are scoped. However, I don't want to use magnification on the SKS, so I want to experiment with holographic sights. I'll probably order a cheap one from ebay just to see how it works for me and if it works well, I'll upgrade to a better quality later.

But my question is really the way I should mount it. I saw replacement bolt cover with Picatinny Rail already installed such as NcStar. I have read about the fact that these kind of mount tend to keep scopes from holding their zero, but would it really be an issue for a Red dot when talking of about a 5moa on the dot itself? I will probably change the stock for a tactical one (ATI or Tapco, yet to be determined). Should I rather mount the sight forward on the stock?

Thanks in advance for your input. (Damn it feels good to be back.:shotgun:)

I don't know where the idea that top cover mounts are all crap and loose. I've had a couple that have been solid as a rock. If your eyes can tolerate a rear mounted aperature sight, the Tech Sight brand is very good. They attach with the rear cover takedown pin.

put the kwikrail on it or buy a scout mount that will replace the rear sight , and if you put the cheapest red dot on it it will not last longer , best one is the Bushnell trs for the price

If you're going to use any sort of reddot, the best way would be either a kwikrail like Dad suggested, or one of the scout scope mounts that replace the rear rights

I've had the same issue with my eyes over the last couple of years.
It really made a difference for me when I installed Tech sights on my 10-22 and one of my SKSes and a Williams peep sight on my SKS-D.
hical.ca, one of the sponsoring dealers, sells them.

Cheap red dots are very expensive. You buy one for like $50 then find out it isn't even bright enough to use outside on a cloudy day. So you buy a new battery for it and realize that the original battery was still good. So you buy another sight and the adjustments don't even work. Now you've spent more than something good like a TRS 25 and have two red dots that are useless. Very expensive. I haven't got a good knock off yet so I stopped blowing piles of cash on them. I'll be trying a Tasco red dot as everyone who owns one really likes them. If they can survive life on M14s and shotguns they can't be that bad. Other than that, the TRS is my go to red dot.

Thanks, this is very helpfull. I like comments that explain the whole decision process. I'll probably follow your advise and look for a TRS25.

I have heard nothing but great things about the TRS, even people mounting them on shotguns and other guns with a lot of kick . I got a dust cover mount, rock solid until about 100 shots, Its basically the piece that takes ALL the recoil of your bolt, not a great place to mount anything , kwik mount at wanstalls, canadaammo has different one, and BC tactical scout mount. Go with one of those for sure. Also, in my experiences and what a lot of people will tell you, a red dot will always be best mounted further up on the rifle, so if just a red dot sight is what you are after, go with the scout mount. If you might put a scope on it at some point, go with a Kwik or the one canadaammo has (I havnt used the kwik yet, but felt on in a store, they are solid and thick, no flimsyness at all.
