'back up' rifle when hunting

I usually pack more guns than I need.

Used to bring my Ag42B as a backup until I sold it.

Haven't been mouse hunting in a while, but I would take my aught six and my pimped M305 just to see the look on the faces of the old guys...

Just make sure you bring appropriate ammo for all the guns you take ;)

Always have a back up with me. Standard is a highly tuned accurate (out of the box) 1987 Rem 700 in .308. Back up is a Win 30-30, Polish Mosin Nagant, Lee Enfield Nr 1 Mk III, Win 120 Pump 12g, SVT-40.

I live on an island and so far bringing just one rifle or just a shotgun with a variety of ammo has been enough...all single shots as well. :)

If I ever got a chance to hunt off island I would probably bring an extra rifle.

;)Here's a handy 'Island' gun. A Brno ZH 304, 7x57R/12ga plus an additional set of OU 12ga barrels.

The cats meow:) especially for walking those old skid roads in the river bottem areas, on 'damp' windy days when you could run into a Ruff Grouse or an 'Island' Blacktail.

I always bring along a .22 as a backup as I always end up using it for getting
camp meat. I've never needed a backup centerfire for larger game cause I
ensure my rifles are fully reliable (Along with the ammo) before heading out.;)

My primary was a scoped rifle in .300 Win Mag.

Back up was a scoped rifle in .30-06 [that also had iron sites].

Very nice! That would work well for me.
Funny story...

A few years back I took my pump shotgun out looking for grouse and deer and as I walked down a deactivated logging road a buck walked out and stood in front of me... of course I was loaded for grouse and while trying to quietly eject the upland bird shot and load with buckshot the deer figured me out and bounded back into the brush to tell all his deer buddies about me.

So I took a few paces down the road and stopped to mark the spot on my GPS, which was the moment a ruffled grouse exploded from the bush by my knee and into the birch trees... Of course I was still loaded with buckshot so I missed that chance as well, Lol oh well.

I soon sold that shotgun and now pack a vintage New England Firearms "Topper" M48 12 gauge for my grouse blaster. :)

Although I have tried others, I still stick with the one I am most comfortable with and I find most reliable: 1944 Lee Enfield .303.

I don't carry a backup for the kind of hunting that I do but I find it interesting that a lot of people carry cheaper rifles as their backup. I would think that if conditions are poor enough (or even if it was an accident) that you'd want a backup rifle that is equally if not more reliable than the one that just failed on you.

My X-Bolt is my primary rifle. My Axis is my backup. Both are 30-06 and using the same ammo so I don't have to lug around 2 sets.

First time I tried bringing two after my buddy talked me into it, I accidentally dropped the X-Bolt (climbing a steep hillside to gain the high ground) and broke the objective lens on my scope(Thank god for Vortex warranty). The Axis was able to get the job done and I will never go without a second rifle again.

I don't normally carry a back-up at all. If I head to the deer camp, we carry a few rifles/shotguns, but that's in case we fill tags we can switch out to coyotes, pheasant, or other small game. Currently saving up for an x-bolt .270 or 30-06 as have to give a 700 .308 back to my buddy that I've been borrowing for a few years. Then will probably pick up a marlin 336 30-30 for back-up/fun.

Would have to say the X-Bolt is the best hunting rifle on the market. If it weren't for money and my wife, I'd have a second as a backup.

Remington Marine Magnum with a scoped/cantilever rifled barrel and loaded with sabot slugs. Pump action 870 (reliability with a no-nonsense finish) and guaranteed 75 yard stopping power = confidence. I also pack a few #2 shot if bringing my other 18" smoothbore barrel.
