I have a Stag AR with a flip back up sight, My bench rest groupings at 100 yards are quite large. Is this normal due to the fact that it is just that { a back up sight }

It depends on a few things. Obviously the shooter, the ammo and the ambient conditions are always factors. The one most over look is their target selection. Using a large target with no defined point of aim will not produce consistant accurate results. You should use some sort of aiming point. For example, shoot at a picture of a clown, aim for the nose of the clown with every shot. This way your point of aim will remain consistant and hopefully your group will too. So long as you do your part. ;)

At 100yd I can get under a 2" group with my ARMS 40 BUIS. Probably smaller if I was using good ammo and 'trying'. I know... not impressive, just my experiecne.

I found that a thin front sight post will make a big difference!

Raks,
remember, you are using iron sights and the AR is a combat rifle with combat accuracy. I'd say 2" with irons at 100 is more than acceptable, unless you compete with the bench rest guys.

At a 100 yards my groups are in the 12-16 inch range, the ammo I use is pretty cheap, and I can shoot all my other rifles pretty good. Mabe its time for a Aimpoint or somthing.

no....there is something very wrong. An aimpoint would solve the problem by ignoring the one you have. The point of the back up sights is that they will be reliable if your aimpoint or other optic fails (plus its fun to shoot with irons alot of the time). Does your rear or front sight have any movement?

12-16in is way out of whack.

Does the back up sight have more than one aperture? I always use the 300m aperture (the small one). An aimpoint may help, but I get tighter groups with irons than with a red dot.

Iam using the small aperture, and everything seems to be tight. Iam heading for the range Monday, so Ill give it another go right from scratch starting again at 25-50 100 yards.

Yeah, there is something wrong here. What kind of ammo is it?

Are you using the sight properly? I was used to shooting rifles with optics or with open sighs and it took me a while to get comfortable aperture sights.

Is this your first time using aperture (i.e., "Peep" sights?) sights? 12"+ groupings at 100 yards, aren't groups! They're patterns! Yikes!

No been using peeps for awhile on min 14's, my M-305 even spent a hole summer once shootin FN's at Borden, I bought some better ammo { Wolf } and my groups today where quite a bit tighter, as well my rifle is brand new mabe getting it broke in and some more practice will do the trick.

12"-16" groups benchrested? Something sounds off. With a BIS, the standard AR15 front post is 2MOA, if the shooter adds another inch of so of variable you're into reasonable 2.5"-3.5" groups or better assuming normal range ammo. If the wolf ammo was better, what were you shooting first?

If those groups don't tighten up, I'd want to take a look at it.

Is you ARMS 40 locktited? Do you shoot with the large or the small aperture? The sight radius is short, it is very sucky for shooting iron witht he carbine length system.

Hey RHAll, a Stag r2 is the Ar I want, so I am following your sight saga closely. I am hoping you will do some of my mistakes for me. :p Keep us ( me ) posted please. BTW where did you get Wolf ammo from ?

Just a note, barrel break in is a myth....Based on your above information I'd say ammo was the culprit. Wolf isn't great ammo either, but it appears to be better than what you started with. Which was what???

Iam not even sure what the first batch of ammo was, I got it at my local gun shop its in a clear bag and the brass is stamped IMG.
