Just installed my FTU and scope on my t97, and would like to get some opinions on what back up sights everyone is using. I running an old Texas manufactured Weaver fixed 4 power scope that takes up the whole flat top, this combined with the low rings I'm using do t allow me to use The flip up sights I was looking at. I've looked at the 45 degree offsets but the seem awarkward to me bit I've never tried them, to the people using them, how do you like them? What other options are out there? Seen some rail/holo sights that mount on top of a scope but I'm not sure if they would hold up and I don't like anything that relies on batteries as a backup. Some sort of back up sight is a must as the gun gets beat on hard, it lives on on my quad, sled, horse, tractor or in my truck.

Buy an Aimpoint or an EoTech and forget about back up sights. They are both nearly indestructible. I've watched videos of them testing an Aimpoint T1 mounted on an AR and they throw it out of a moving truck then run over it with the truck and then throw it from a helicopter and it still worked.
I don't think you will put it through that much abuse.

It takes batteries and it cost too much for a cheap beater gun. I'm seriously leery of anything that takes batteries, I've went went to my hunting partners house for a beer and been gone for a week and a 3 hour truck ride and 14 hours on a quad away from the nearest town.

Aimpoint will last for over a year left on continuously. Carry a spare battery in your pack and you can pretty much forget about it.
If it's just a cheap beater gun why did you bother spending $400 on the FTU and getting rid of the robust battery free iron sights? Sounds like a silly decision.
If you want robust you have to pay for it. A cheap Weaver scope isn't going to be reliable if you beat the crap out of your rifle like you say you do. An Aimpoint isn't really that expensive (not much more than your FTU) and will last for years, definitely last longet than the disposable rifle you're putting it on.

The scope was put on because I wanted magnification, something the iirons did not offer. I have a hard time with peep style irons due too my prescription as well. I might have to look into an aim point, as I wasn't aware the batteries lasted that long. I do really like the scope that is on it now, and it's not exactly a "cheap weaver" it's one of the old made in America metal tube scopes and has lasted for over 50 years on numerous hunting rifles. Would really prefer to keep it, if I can figure out a decent back up sight option.

Have you looked at Magpul of Fab Defense BUIS?

They're reasonably priced and pretty darn small.

Some of the fancier magnified optics have built in miniature irons on top of them, like the Spectre DR. Maybe look for an affordable C79 on the EE?

You could get a higher quick release mount for the Weaver scope, and use something like Magpul Backup sights. They should flip down and fit under the scope if you use something like a Burris P.E.P.R.

I think this is what I'm gonna have to do, the scope height with the FTU is pretty good so a slightly taller quick detach should work out.

My only worry would be battery life during winter. On arctic patrol we have to keep everything that is battery operated inside our clothing to keep them running. BUIS or a rugged non-battery optic are definitely the way to go in those conditions.

KAC sells 45 degree sights.

Dueck Defense Rapid Transition Sights.
These are 45 degree offset sights and they work amazingly well.
These are sometimes called Surefire backup sights because Barry Dueck works for Surefire.

I have a SeeAll mounted with a JP 45deg at the front of my rifle. Seems like it works well, haven't fired any rounds with it yet but I can track the cat with it very well.

Can the spectre Dr sights be changed to night sights?
