backpack hunting

I am planning an overnight backpack hunt and would appreciate any gear suggestions/tips.

We will tent camp at a small lake ( 1300m), and are debating hiking from there approx 1200m to hunt mule deer in mid september. The debate is should we hike up/down each day or pack a smaller tent to the higher hunting area and spend 1 or 2 nights. Part of the decision will be based on gear requirements. The temp is generally warm mid day and above 0 at night.

I have found that Backpacks are tough to kill... especially the Eastern subspecies. They hang out in large gangs in front of convenience stores and are easily provoked into charging.

You'll be hunting mulies, not goats....so I imagine that comming back to "base" camp should probably be best, at least that's what I would do. Good luck though, whatever your decision.

I would decide based on how quickly I can get form base camp to hunting area in the dark, in the morining.

a 1200 meter hike every morning will get real old real fast, bring a smaller tent anyways and see how you feel, then you have the option of staying out.

are you hiking 1200m vert. change or is that the alt. of your camp? 1200m vertically every morning will suck hard. although 1200m walk over level terain is a stroll....

We have camped close to where we wanted to hunt and just threw a ground sheet down and slept under a tree. I had a few extra clothes in the pack as you can take it off but you can't put it on if you don't have it.

Darn! Is it that late in the year?? I didn't even know they were in season already. Better get my Backpack sack out of storage and find my skinning knife!

Yes, I've seen them peering over the front push bumper of my Chevy P/U as I pull as close to the cases of 7/11 firewood as I can!!!

Thanks for the info. The 1200m change is elevation, from an atv access lake, I should add that most of this change is at the start of the hike.The first 45 minutes are tough. The intention is to get to the tree line early and glass/walk the various open meadows on top.

PS Most backpacks are parasitic and if provoked will quickly drain the energy of the carrier, providing a much easier target. Others will leave their hosts at the first sign of distress and play possum.

if you are hunting lower mainland areas... seen as you are from maple ridge. I have bagged a few blacktails up in the valley, east harrison and chilliwack and we hike in and make a small camp on the edge of the treeline at the alpine edge. Some good deer hunting if you know where to look... have even seen a few of those rare lower mainland mountain goats... and i'm not kidding.
