Backpack - rifle case ideas

Since I started shooting rifle, I got this big and heavy rifle hard case, and use my IPSC gear bag which I have to empty each time I go to the range to shoot either pistol or rifle.
I am ready to spend, but don't want to spend on something I would regret sooner than later.

What setup do you use to carry your gear around?
Ringing gongs on crown land, attending a match or a course, or even just regular range visits.

Right now I have looked at a few options.
The one that seems to make more sense, is to have a separate pack for gear and a soft rifle case.
I have seen that Eberlestock have got a backpack rifle combo, unless I am going to trek in the woods for a long way to get to target, it looks quite bulky.

Please do not hesitate to share pictures of your transportation gear!
 
My rifle doesn’t fit in that bag.
I guess I’m overdue for a folding stock.
Rifle measures 49”, they have a 5.11 50” on that cabelas site.
May be a tight fit.

Best be careful you dont fall into the concealed carry problem that may happen from keeping a gun in a back pack....
 
You'll see the vast majority of people at field matches wearing a backpack of their choice and their rifle slung.

I use an Arcteryx Khard 30 backpack, and the rifle is slung up with a rifles only bungee sling utilizing a tactical tailor pad over the bungee for more comfort. The backpacks that can also carry rifles (in a scabbard) are falling out of favor for just slinging the rifle. The scabbards are generally awkward and cumbersome, and it gets annoying to constantly be moving your rifle in and out of a scabbard.

Just to go to and from the range, the rifle will be brought to and from the firing line in a TacOps drag bag - bonus with this drag bag is it includes a shooting mat.

The pelican/storm cases are reserved only for air travel. They are large and cumbersome, and it's way Overkill for car travel.
 
I recently picked up a VISM by NcSTAR Double Carbine Case and it's well built and not to expensive. It has pack straps but they aren't meant for long trips in the backcountry fully loaded. I rode my motorbike to the range the other day with 2 rifles in the bag and some other gear and it worked well, the weight was resting on the seat so the cheap pack straps didn't need to support the load much.


edit, just noticed your rifle is 49 inches long..... I think the longest Vism is 42"

Thanks all for replies.
Seems like any soft case, and any rucksack (3 day pack size) will do the bill.
If going to an event just need to add a sling.
Was just checking if there was a setup in particular that everyone uses.
At least I won't have dropped lot's of monies in an eberlestock scabbard kit.

For pack I have a soft spot for 5.11 stuff, probably end up getting rush 24, for sling I was thinking a SAP sling
For case I will look into better than NC star, in the event I wish to backpack it for a few KMs on crown land.

My setup is to transport my rifle in a hard, pelican-esque case to and from ranges/matches, throw it over my shoulder and walk with it from stage to stage. All my gear never leaves my Eberlestock X1A1 backpack with scabbard, although this is more of a hunting backpack. I could throw my match rifle in there, but I am too conditioned to walking with it over my shoulder and never have to walk more than 500 or so meters with it at a time.

Another good solution is a case that doubles as a shooting mat, you know, if you're a baby and can't lay on the ground :redface:
 
I've been using a 5.11 Rush 24 as a range bag for years and don't see that changing anytime soon. I keep all my essentials in it and pretty much just have to load with that days ammo and I'm set. The rifles ride in the truck in a hard case then are carried from there. I have 2 Eberlestock packs but they're not for range use. My smaller Gunrunner is used for carrying a shotgun and a days gear on the quad/trikes/bikes and I just got a G4 Operator for longer trips. Sounds like all you need is a good range bag.

Yes indeed.
I used to have a CED backpack, the pro one or whatever they called it, the biggest of the two a monster of a backpack.
Wasn't convenient.

For now I will get rush24 at local cabelas,
For soft rifle case I will wait and see, also saw that voodoo tactical cases have pretty much the features i'd want.

Don't get a Voodoo case. I have one for my M14 and it's not great quality, especially for what you pay for one. The stitching has come apart in lots of places and it really hasn't seen any hard use, mainly form the truck to the range and back.

For my bolt guns, if I'm flying, I use my Pelican case. For trips to the range and matches, I have a Triad Tactical drag bag. It's made in the States, not crazy expensive and they ship up here. More importantly the quality is top notch. You can get back pack straps for it if you want but I rarely use it that way, if I'm hiking anywhere and want to keep the rifle in the drag bag.I put a long strap on it so I can sling it over my shoulder and over my pack as well. For most hiking and for matches and field matches, I use a Mystery Ranch 3-Day Assault pack (I used a Tactical Tailor Malice pack before but it's way overkill) and just sling my rifle. If it's raining I have a wrap made by Sunrise Tactical down in Wa that goes around the whole action to keep the rain out.

I usually use 5.11 RUSH 24 pack and a Eberlestock Sniper Sled drag bag when I go for a soft case. Lots of storage space in the Sniper Sled.Plus the pouches are Molle so you can take them off and/or add different ones........

Very nice bag!
A bit on the high end of pricing,
So far i am leaning towards cadex drag bag, just under 200$.
This coupled with the rush 24 should last me a while
 
I use a Condor 131: Sniper Shooters Mat

identical to the NCStar VISM just branded differently.

it comes with back back slings but I removed all the slings and shoulder straps, and some of the parts on the inside, which are sort of gimmicky. I only use it to carry my rifle from one shooting mound to the next. its pretty handy to quickly pufo, just fold the bipod, lay it down fold the mat up and grab the handles, don't even have to zip it or use the snaps. Quick to deploy also, lay it down, unfold it and set the rifle up.

The rest of my gear is in a day pack: ammo&mags, shooting bags, ear pro, water, etc...

For the price, its good for its basic purpose and it works well, to lie on and to carry the rifle to the next mound.

Not really good photos, was focusing on the rifle ... you get the picture though.

I'm also using the Eberlestock drag bag. Just excellent.....worth the $$$

The usmc ilbe assault pack designed by Arcteryx is great. I use that also, cheap and well made. Win-win.

For a made in Asia product, Eberlestock is expensive but good design and quality control, for some reason I find their back pack sizing to fit medium to short people better then people over 6 feet.

The NC Star/Vism bags are also made in Asia and so far seem well built with quality materials, heavy duty Zippers and good stitching.
 
Small update
Came back from Cabelas
Took the rush 24 backpack, looks very well made and spacious.
Left the 5.11 urban sniper 50’’ drag bag on the rack, too big and bulky.
Really loved the 42-45’’ tactical gun bags.

Which brings me to research the MDT ESS folding buttstock.
If people are satisfied and if it locks solid, i will buy new buttstock, and fit rifle in a more compact bag
