What do you guys take with you?

Deer will prob be a non issue, but for bears I think it would be a smart idea to have some sort of a back up.

I stuck a pistol grip on my maverick 88 with 18.5" barrel.... OAL is approx 27"
I can carry it, my bow, and pack quite easily.

Might want to check on your regulations, I know for a fact that for archery only seasons in MB no other weapon may be carried.
Considering most bowhunters consider archery equipment to be as formidable a weapon as a firearm, why would you need a back-up? ;)

If your bear concern is only black bears, I think a bow is all you need for protection.
I once belonged to an informal bow hunting group who in one summer, shot eleven bears. Bears were always open season then, with no bag limit and no tag was required. This was at a time when a semi recurve was a modern bow.
We killed every bear we drew blood on. However, every bear hit would take off like an express train, usually only going a short distance. Never did any even remotely look like they were going to come toward the shooter.
I have never, ever, heard of a black bear attacking, after having been hit with any gun projectile, or arrow. I have often read of a woman whacking a black bear with a broom/shovel/stick, when the bear was after the dog/kid/calf, and the bear runs off.

You don't need backup Qhergt..You are so proficient with a bow that you can take a deer on a full run without question. You will be just fine.

my only concern is if it runs towards me after being hit with the bow... Mind you, if that happened and it was close enough to me that I couldn't get another arrow off, i wouldn't have time to grab the shotgun.

I do know of ONE case of a black bear that was determined to cause hurt to the bowhunter after he had been arrowed.
Whether this bear would have had the residual energy to do serious harm or not is unknown, since the bowhunter WAS carrying backup in the form of a Ruger Super Blackhawk.
He shot the bear in the head at 6 feet.
The bare skull resides on this gent's mantle, with a nice 44 cal hole right above one eye.
I know him personally, and he was pretty shook up right after the incident.
FWIW, the arrow was placed perfectly at 15 yards.
Regards, Eagleye.

it is usually not the arrowed bear you will have to worry about but the other bears in the area.in particular around a bait site.

Cant bait here in BC... and on the island they are pretty much everywhere. find the berries or since the salmon are running, a river lined with dead rotting fish.
