Since I tore a muscle in my calf two weeks ago I've been b!tching to my wife that I'm missing out on a good part of varmint season. Yesterday the docs figured that my leg wasn't healing fast enough and have put it in an aircast and given me three weeks off........
Well today my wife and kids saw a big groundhog crossing our backyard! So my plan for next week is a simple one. Rest my leg on the back porch on a lawn chair with a good book, and my .243. :sniper: R:d:

Good man.

You can also have the wife drive you out to your favorite ground hog field, set you up with a cooler of pop and snacks, in the shade, with a cell phone for when you're ready to go home (or want a Tim Horton's). Hey, you could have a great 3 weeks my friend;)

Make sure she picks you up at the end of the day? I deer and moose hunted with a bow and a full leg cast.

Sounds like a plan. Hope you don't have close neighbors who don't like gunfire. Heal well and happy hunting.

The little neighbors I do have all follow the rule of the three S`s.
We often hear gunshots in rural areas.

The groundhog in question was out and about in the yard this morning. Sunning itself on the ramp in front of my shed. Then it decided to explore a woodpile......would have had a great shot there.....about 40 yards from my porch. I just need to be patient, wait till all the kids are at school.....lots of the neighborhood kids play in the hayfields. It will be safer during the week. :D

I have yet to bow hunt, but i hear that most people are using arrow. What kind of range did you get when you let loose that leg cast from your bow? Was it hard to nock?
Just joking. Couldn't resist.

BTW, OP, I use my .22LR for gophers, a little safer, but if they are a ways off, then use the .243. Or if that is the smallest you have, then definitely use the .243. Enjoy your time off, I know I would.

I have a few .22 rimfires but my fav rifle for groundhogs is my .243. I was thinking of the SKS but I have no hunting ammo for it, only FMJ and thats a BIG nono in Quebec.

Well I got the groundhog

I decided Rookie wildcat had a good suggestion and used the .22 instead. I don't shoot that rifle enough anymore.
It did bring back memories of my childhood shooting an earthpig with the old Cooey.
It was an interesting setup. Cup of coffee, book (I’ve been on a John LeCarre binge), lawn chair on the back porch......well out from under my shed comes Mr. Marmotte . Sees me on the porch and goes back under. 10 minutes later out he comes again. Walks around the front of the shed where a tree hides me from his sight. I put my book down, pick up my old Cooey, remove the safety and now it’s going around to the other side of the shed. The shot was about 30 yards quartering away. I put Remington Yellow Jacket behind it’s left shoulder that left a nice exit hole about 1” in diameter on it’s right side. Good sized one also, about 10 pounds.

Those things are huge. They must be very destructive.

They are, that's why most farmers love to see a varmint hunter...Last year one farmer came to get me while I was on his neighbors land. Some groundhogs had burrowed under some irrigation pipes. Everything caved in and it cost him close to 10k to get the damage fixed. I nailed about 20 on his farm that summer.
