got this bacon revolver in .31 cal when i measured the cylinder it's
.37 could there be that much of a difference in size im thinking someone
tried drilling it out to convert it to a .36 or something the barrel is a .31 i don't think bacon ever made a revolver in .36cal

the serial number on the cylinder is the same as on the barrel wedge and grip
anyone have one that they can measure the cylinder for me or maybe a 1849 colt it should be the same.

the strange thing is i noticed on the picture someone wrote jesse james just
below the cylinder. you cant see it written on the gun at all it only shows
up in the photo.

You never know...It could be chambered in the same cal as the navy colt.

Only way to tell is to get a soft ball that you would use in a navy colt and see if it chambers with no more then average "acceptable" pressure with the loading lever.

Then take the nipple out and with a small jag hammer the ball out.

take off the barrel assembly and then with the jag tap the ball through the barrel.

You'll quickly know if shes a 31 or a 36!;)

i do have a 31 colt mold the ball fits nice in the barrel but just falls in
the cylinder.
on closer inspection i can see swirl marks in the cylinders so someone did drill or ream it out.i have a lathe so i think i can easily make inserts for it.
there was only 1000 of the model 3 bacon revolvers made and this one
locks up nice and tight with no play anywhere so i don't know why
someone would mess it up like this.

Some one actually reamed the cylinder chambers???H:S:

Its really amazing that your going to repair it, keep her shootin for another 150 years!!
 
I can think of two possible reasons.

One is that the person that reamed them out was trying to clean up corrosion damage.

The other is that it was done to prevent it from being used as a firearm, prior to handing it over as a toy for their kids. Though I would expect that the nipples would have been removed, in the latter instance.

If you have the technology to build some liner for the cylinder, you are off to the races (or the range!).
