Found this casing at our Range after I heard reports of a 45 Colt blowing up.

General consensus appears that it was overloaded ?
The pistol literally self destructed, sending shrapnel everywhere. Fortunately no-one was hurt, 'cept maybe someones pride

Cheers nessy.

Holy cow that is ugly! I 'd say it was overloaded with C4! I assume the portion of the case which is not there went into orbit along with the top strap? Any more details?

Only if it was way, way overloaded. Like, filled to capacity with Bullseye or FFFFg flash powder kind of overloaded.

There is almost no distortion of the case or evidence of shear on the fracture surfaces, indicating it had no chance to yield or bend, it just blew apart. This means that the pressure rose to a level where it could overwhelm the strength of the brass and the steel supporting it, virtually instantly. This is outside the realm of a deflagrating propellent, which should build a smooth pressure curve.

I vote powder detonation.

I haven't talked to the shooter, only the person standing next to him when it blew. There's a big dent in the shooting bench (behind and to the left from where he was shooting) where the cyl hit, a piece of shrapel put a hole in a plastic box, and a few more marks around the covered area at the firing line.
It's a miracle no-one got hit.
I think the shooter is a little embarassed  he's claiming that his backstrap let go

Wow!! There would be more than my "backstrap" letting go if I would have been anywhere near that thing when it let go!!:p:p

bob, i read an article about that sort of thing shooting light load cast bullets, it said the gun slowly leaded up till the bore gets tight enough to stop one of the low velocity bullets and the next one blows up the gun when fired with a unknown obstruction in the barrel, maybe more cleaning is in order,, good no one got hurt, wade

Barrel obstructions blow the barrel. In this case, it is clearly the cylinder that let go.
