Bad Powder?

A buddy of mine just bought two brand new 1lb cans of H-4895 powder and took them to use in reloading 6.5x55

When the bottles were opened the powder inside was brown, not some of it but all of it.

He has never seen that before. And is wondering if that is something new, or if it is powder that has gone bad.

He will be calling Hodgdon in the morning but I am curious now if anyone has heard of this before.

Never heard of brown H 4895. Could be something new.

or, it could be mis-labelled powder. Calling Hodgen is a good idea. I would not sue it until I was satisfied.

BTW, unless he is loading a light bullet, 4350 would be a better choice of powder.

I told him to check for a lot number on the containers to have that info when he calls. Hopefully there is such a number visible.

Bofors makes a brown powder called RP28. So there are brown powders out there. It is not sold as a canister powder. Excellent stuff and similar in speed to 4895.

As far as I know it smells normal, no abnormal smell.

Yup H4895,is a greyish olive color.
