Baikal 45-70 double rifle range day

I don't have a use for this rifle but my father-in-law has informed me that he is interested in getting a rifle for bear defense and I'm thinking this maybe a very good choice.

Not sure if I like the idea of a scope on a double rifle. I can picture myself standing in a swamp calling to a love sick bull moose with a double 45/70 in my hands though.

thanks for the pics and targets.

Scopes are used all the time on many double rifles. They help when the yards get long and the eyes get bad. The beauty of double rifles is that a 22 inch bbl acts like it is 4 inches shorter because the action is that much shorter.

Everyone who strains to save a 1/2 inch of action length with the new short mags should look to a single or double rifle to save over all length while retaining decent bbl length.

Keep up the reports - I too am interested - I have the one is 30-06 and would like to see how this one shakes out.

A buddy just bought one of these rifles, and he says that his long range BPCR load of 20.0 gr. IMR SR4759 with 1/8" florist's foam over powder wad, large rifle primer, and 400 gr. cast bullet works very well in his. very accurate. He said he had to mess with regulating a bit, but he says it is much more pleasant to shoot and plink with than his IMR 3031+ 400 gr. Jacketed soft point Speer load. He says the recoil from the full power load is nasty in that little light rifle. His new bear gun.
