Coming back to the subject of the MP-153

hopefully will be purchasing one very shortly, mainly for turkey. does it come with available turkey choke or is there aftermarket chokes available. thanks

The MP-153 comes with 4 chokes C, IC, M and Full (all steel rated).
Xtra -Full chokes (also steel rated) are available as an accessory from BaikalCanada. Your gunshop will have to order one for you.

The 24" barrel model of the MP-153 comes with IC, M, F and XF.

I don't know how well the factory XF choke patterns.

BTW there are camo versions of the MP-153 available now here in Canada. Don't know about pricing.

Colonial chokes will fit. I plan on getting one for turkey as well. They make a 26 inch with polymer stock. BTW, Hastings Tru Chokes are also good to go.

Its too bad these run for double what they do in the states or else they would sell like hotcakes.

You said it. I would probably start a collection of all of the Baikal shotguns.

That or find an FFL right near te border who is willing to go through all the ATF and export paperwork:(

They request that you for the first 100 rounds shoot light loads, before getting to the heavy turkey loads that i will be using .any recomendations for a skeet/target club in around Barrie,Ontario or a short drive from there (G>T>A). thanks

I think I am in for a 24" camo. I had a 28" Black Synthetic, never fired it. I have a buddy who swears by his, excellent and very reliable.
Has anyone removed the recoil pad on one yet? i am wondering how hard it would be to knock off 3/4" ?

The gun must be broken in.

Initially, it may not eject/cycle light loads.

To break it in, you must use relatively heavy loads until it starts cycling the lighter loads.

My recommendations:

Don't play with the gas adjustment valve. Leave it at the factory setting.

Start with 3" magnum shells (the cheapest possible). these will cycle properly. DON'T USE TURKEY LOADS YET. DON'T USE 3 1/2" SHELLS.

Then fire some 2 3/4" field loads (1 1/4 oz. loads). If they cycle properly, try some lighter 1 1/8 oz. loads.

You can consider that the shotgun is broken-in once the gun cycles these 1 1/8 loads properly.

You may have to adjust the gas valve when you want to use the lightest (1 oz.) target loads or the 3 1/2" supermagnum heavy loads.

Some owners say that their guns cycle everything from the lightest target to the heaviest 3 1/2" loads without adjustments to the gas valve.

first 100 should be heavy yes, and the factory setting should cover the 3.5s as well. i intent to make a mark on my adjustment so i know exactly how it was set up from the factory, and then i can tune it accordingly.

Have any MP-153 owners had to cut + insert their own magazine plug?

Any advice?

Yes... actually two guys were charged last fall (I guess they didn't check)
After a little convincing by the shop owner and the fact that a mountie also was charged... the CO ended up asking the court to dismiss them, apparently they cannot drop the charge as it is Federal.

The guns shop then went through their books and called everyone who bought one and put a dowel in it.

Advice... well if anyone here has already done it.... please tell the man how long to cut the dowel. If not, take a dowel and cut it to approximately the size of 2 3.5" shells (probably around 6 ") Put it in the tube and try loading 3 shells in the mag..... if you can only get 2 then you are almost done.....
Now try 3 2.75 inch shells. If you really want to be a keener you can also try 2.5" shells but they are uncommon and I doubt you will have to worry about them.

I am told if you can fit an extra 2.75 but you are 3s or 3.5s you should be fine anyway as long as you don't have any in your possesion but better safe than sorry...

If the dowel is too long... cut it, if it is too short repeat step 1

Please be safe and load the mag in a controlled evironment or use Dummy shells.

Thanks C68! I appreciate it.

For now I've just put an old dowel from my 870 in it.

Sept is a looooooong time away though. Bah.

When buying an MP-153 you must ask the gunshop to have it plugged.

Fact is that Baikal Canada is supplying them with original "made in Russia" plastic plugs designed for the MP-153. Mine came like that. The plugs are coming separate from the box. I guess the gunshops are using them to plug other guns...

In case the original plug is "gone missing", a reputable gunshop should be more than happy to supply you with at least a dowel. Or otherwise you can make one yourselves as per bill c68's instructions.

Just out of curiosity, are the barrels of MP 153s matched to the receiver by serial number?

No, the serial number appears only on the receiver.

Yes, it is relatively new.

Let your friend make sure he is getting plugs from Baikalcanada with the next shipment.

No big deal, it's just a black plastic piece.
