Baikal MP-446C “VIKING” 9mm

Hi,

I want to buy the Baikal MP-446C “VIKING” 9mm, but it is very hard to find any good reviews/ opinions about it to convience me it is worth buying.
No shops in Toronto and GTA that carry it - at least to my knowledge.

Has anyone tried this Russian handgun? Pros/ Cons, weak points/ parts, FTF, FTE?

Pros-Great gun. Runs any type of ammo. I've never had any type of failure. SA trigger is really good.

Cons- finish is thin, mags are stiff and difficult to load, holster availability sucks. Sights are ok, at best.

Agree. That's pretty much my experience with mine so far as well. I'm very happy with mine. Bought it used, and it cleaned up nice. It's a well built gun, well worth the money. I don't dislike the sights as much as bollox does.

While fondling and dry firing at home there were a couple things I thought I didn't like about the grip, but once at the range it was totally comfortable. Never even noticed any of my imagined gripes.

yap that is it, rugged and reliable single action is very nice but paint job and sight definitely need some improving, thou thru reading russian forums online i figured even russian cops dont know how to properly load the mags for that gun. You dont slide rounds under the lip conventional way, rather just push them on top like with rifle mags, IMHO i think its actually easier that way, but if you do slide them under like with a normal mags it does become real pita that way )) other wise its an excellent choice if you want something reliable but dont want a glock

That was one of my primary reasons why I am looking into this handgun.
I find the Glock to be a very good gun but with a very good price.
For someone like me who is just getting into the hobby $800-900 guns are a little bit too far right now.

The grip is good so far. No slipperyness detected. :D

I'm holding it right now - just playing around with it here at home you might think it could be slippery. But at the range I had zero problems with the grip. Feels very comfortable and secure to me. It has some ribbing/texturing that gives some traction, and it's shaped (like most decent pistol grips) so it sorta locks into the hand and isn't prone to moving around. And it's a 9mm! Come on man, they kick like a .22. :D
 
After much consideration I cannot decide if the Baikal is the right first handgun for me, even though it was highly recommened by some guns owners.
I have looked into Glock, Taurus, Zastava, HK, Norinco, and a few more. It is hard for me to conclude what is a good first handgun for me.

Any suggestions, as I am a little lost here.

It's very hard to recommend a first pistol. There are a lot of things to consider, budget, weight, grip size, feel etc etc...

The best way is to go to your local range with some ammo and ask those nice owners if you can try a few rounds. Most would be more than willing.

Based on the results you'll be able to make a better decision. It's like test driving.

Don't sweat it - just buy whatever you think is cool. You're highly unlikely to buy just one anyway - you'll buy more. :D Trust me, you will. :D And if whatever you buy doesn't work out you can easily sell it off here on the EE. Guns hold their value pretty well.

Want my good first gun suggestion? Get yourself a CZ-75B. Used or new. They're reasonably priced and super nice guns. They feel like they were custom made for your hand, and with a set of Hogue grips they're even better. I really love mine - bought it used on the EE. It's easy to be accurate with it.

CZ-75B was one of my top guns I was looking at.
Yeah I do not think I will be happy with one handgun only.
I know 9mm has the .22 punch, but I have been shooting with .22LR and for some reason it feels more of a natural progression to go to 9mm...is that right to think?

Nothin wrong with that. I started out with .45ACP - a 1911. Always liked them. It's really fun to shoot. During a range session, shooting .45ACp, 7.62x25, .357 Magnum and 9mm, the 9mm's always feel anemic in comparison. But if you're shooting only 9mm you probably won't have that comparison and won't notice it. 9mm certainly kicks harder than .22 - I was just having fun with that - it's in comparison to the harder kicking calibers that it "feels like shooting a .22". :D .38 Specials feel even softer.

I was just looking at the CZ 75B-9mm Luger and I think I will go ahead and pick one.....crap now the CZ 97B 45ACP looks good. One at the time, one at the time!

I still own a Viking MP-446, one of the older ones and love it.

A year or two back received a silver medal with it at IPSC provincials.
A couple of facts that have not been mentioned here earlier about the gun...

It is build as a "sporting" copy of Russian full metal frame pistol, current issue side arm.
The breach on Viking is dimensionally identical to Gratch (I think that's what R.Military one is called) which eats new issue 9X21 super-hot armour piercing stuff. Viking is chambered for 9X19 Luger of course.
Being a cheaper than Scrooge re-loader that was a factor for me, nearly impossible to blow up with too hot loads.

Downside is extra mags as an afterthought are un-obtainium, so for the price, interammo's full metal frame Viking with 6 mags is an awesome deal, IMHO.

Personally, trigger in single action could be snappier, sights are great, just my 2 cents.

As was mentioned earlier, either way you will turn in an addict, as the rest of us.

im also very interested in one of these vikings.
i saw earlier that the holsters arent very good, is there any other pistol holster that is compatable? or do you just have to "adapt" to it?
