Baikal one shot rifle?

Hi guys,

Happy New year

I was looking at this one shot rifle by BAIKAL,anyone got one? How about quality? The sights looks metal but from the only picture I saw, it's hard to know. The rifle sure looks good, I like the trigger style. I already have a one shot H&R in .270win and I might buy a Baikal in either .308 or 30-06 but need a bit more info before doing so...but the price is really good, +-$250can.:)

They also advertise a hammer forged chrome lined barrel, is that any good or is it a cheap construction? What can I expect?

Baikal is Russian, how is the quality on these guns? If I remember well, I had a shotgun by them and the quality seemed average but it was long tome ago...and my memory could play tricks on me if I rely too much on it :eek:

I've got a single shot 12 ga Baikal. Don't expect anything special. Its a barrel, and action and a trigger. The metal is average to good, but still is rust prone so check that out carefully, and the wood is average to bad. These are very VERY lightweight so you really feel the recoil, think about investing in a pad. Ask a dealer how accurate they are too. I don't trust cheap russian stuff...
For the price, get a Savage.
 
I've looked at them first hand, and I'm tempted to buy one. They are somewhat crude, but one of my friends has one that shoots under 1 moa all day long. Another does about 2 moa.

The wood is very proud; if you wanted to practice sanding and finishing, here's the chance! There is at least 1/16 of wood sticking out around everything! I think the stock might take on a fairly nice contour, with a bit of patience.

The thing that appeals to me is that they are a takedown - no fuss, no bother, just pop off the forearm and unlatch the barrel. I think it would make a perfect little .30-06 backpacker.

Yah indeed :) That's a good point, it would be a perfect use for it or as a backup rifle, once apart, it doesn't take too much place :) The rear/front sights look like metal, not plastic if I am correct so that's a positive side compare to plastic sights on other model. My H&R came with no sights but I think that the model having some are plastic....

I contacted Baikal and they will send me a catalog or their product with more detail info so hopefully, there will be more to read and see compare to what's on their website like twist rate, trigger mech, sights etc.

They told me that there is a shop in Vanier/Ottawa that carry their rifle, I probably will end up there sometimes soon to see and touch :cool: before buying.

For the usage I want it for, if it group below 2" at 100yds with commercial ammo, it leaves place for improv so with reloads,it will serve it's destiny well :). Also as some mentionned, I don't expect a high end quality rifle but with a litte work, good care and some minor mod, it sure will be a nice inexpensive little rifle for which I already have a place in the gunsafe :)
