Baikal side by side rifle

I went to one of my local hunting stores yeasterday and looked at a Baikal side by side rifle in .30-06 (also available in .270 and .308). It was selling for around $850.00. I caught my interest because it's just different than the rifles we are acustomed to see in stores. Workmanship was ok and typical Baikal. The barrels could be aligned with an adjustment underneath in between the barrels. It certainly peeked my interest as it is quite compact because there's really very little action length. Has anyone ever shot or own one? I'm wondering about there "inherent" accuracy... or lack there of.

good rifle - i have one and like it

triggers are a bit on the heavy side

it doesnt like full factory loads too much -- some may be ok

i load just below my good 30-06 load with 760 powder ans 180 gr RN for very good accuracy

where did you see one for $850?

That's strange. I see them in their catalogue for $1099.00. Yet I remember looking at the price tag for $850? Sorry, must have been a mistake.
 
A double rifle from any other maker starts at just under 10 grand US. Most are 5 figure rifles. I'd want to know about the availabilty of parts. Baikals are fairly well known for no parts being available.
 
I agree a good double rifle has a certain amount of class, I don't think that the Baikal could fall into that category. However I did handle one and it was small and handy, but it had many shortcomings.
 
Are the 45-70 still being produced. I have 1 but would like another. This one needs some work to align the barrels for similar poi. Grandson shot a bear with it. Looks cool in the pics like a $25 000 British double, till you get close. Mark

Oh yes! That would be a big seller! Two fast heavy shots. Excellent for close up work!

I forget to ask if it had auto extractors. I know on my over and under 12 Baikal it does and yet on my dad's Baikal side by side 12 it's just lifters. Probably just lifters.

I'm curious - have you found out if they'll take 'full' handloads, or do you have to keep the loads to the old black powder spec?
