Baiting bears near a dump . . .

Hey guys,

I'm thinking of trying to bait bears near my local landfill this year (within a mile or two, so I figure that's near).

Has anyone ever tried this? I am wondering if it's hard to compete with a dump, considering it's like a supermarket for scavengers.

not sure of the legalities of this ......
but allegedly there was a bear harassing my parents , but was very hard to catch .

one day a chicken appeared hanging from a tree about 10 - 12 feet off of the ground .

then it was just a matter of waiting .

after a couple of days the smell of the chicken should overpower almost anything else , distracting the bear while you line up your rifle on him .

too hard. you might get a bear, but if they are using the dump to find food, why would they go to a bait?

as long as your 400 yards from it, your good to shoot. just make sure about local bylaws if you live in town.

An average bear's range is up to 40kms. I'm sure they all eat at the dump at some point. If you shoot your bear early while fruits and berries are abundant you should be ok......

Basically - I live about 5 mins from the dump.

I want to bait relatively close to my house so I have time to stock it every day, even if I am busy.

This means any bait site I make will be close to the dump unless I cross the Saint John river.

And no, you are not allowed to hunt inside the dump. They have the same 200/400 restriction as churches, homes, schools, etc.

Which is too bad!

But yeah, I imagine I'd be better off baiting a little further down the road.

Ya, your right, head a little further down the road and you will be fine. Another couple of hundred yards should do it ;)

Dump bear is fine eatin boy, think of all the added flavor without the extra cost of spices :p :)

I'm not too hung up on size. I just want one bigger than the one I got last year.

I only have one evening a week to hunt, so I need to make sure they are coming in regularly. I can hunt mornings, but I don't know if that time of day is quite as productive.

I thought all dumps were shut down in NB a few years back, what is in this dump?

And if you are hunting garbage bears, can you not just hunt at the dump? or is that off limits?

all the NB dumps are shut down....now we have "Regional Sanitary Landfills":jerkit:

Coach,I think you'll find there's already an outfitter or three with clients hunting that general area for heads and hides.....they don't hunt for meat and I wouldn't eat a bear from there neither.:puke:

Go up above your place instead, upriver,on the base, out the junction....anywhere but there for a clean bear.
