Baiting bears....what do you use?

There is a bagged product sold in Ontario called Trophy Bear that is easy to work with, pour corn syrup and/or molasses over it. Rotting beaver carcasses are supposed to a preference.

Tried it all. The fish, or beaver carcas in a sack works great for bringing them in.

Meat scraps are by far the best to keep big bears when fall baiting. You don't have to tend bait as often with meat as it keeps em full longer. Every two/tree days works, unless you have a few bears hitting the bait.Never put fish in your bait barrel. Once it gets rancid even the bears won't hit it.Start out with a small amount of bait until they start hitting it. Even if the meat gets too rotten the bears won't touch it.

Donuts are fine for bringing them in, but doesn't keep them there.

a few years ago we had a power outage and my freezer unthawed..anyway..i took the food to the dump..there were bears there .started throwing out all the meet and stuff..got to this black forest cake and the bears nose went straight in the air..i threw it at him..he caught it in his mouth and the cake covered his whole head..funny as heck..so ya..blackforest cake works

I don't know .... but I ran into a hitchcockian scene out hunting this fall. About 5 miles back in the woods, birds singing, wind in the willows, brooks babbling, all was peaceful .... then I heard something that didn't fit in.

It could only be described as high intensity, low pitched metallic pinging. Curiosity killed the stooge, so I stuck an extra round in the pump & followed the din. Just when I got to where I thought the source was - the sound all stopped & you could hear a pin drop.

I inched closer ..... suddenly, & with no effing warning about 30 crows flew up in my face & from out & around this oil drum that was suspended with chains & stuffed with apples, donuts, molasses & gawdknowswhat else. Wipe! It scared the flucking BEEEGEEEEZZZZZUZZZZZZ out of me. :kickInTheNuts::eek:

It turns out the sound was that of the crow's wings flapping inside the partially hollow drum & their beaks pecking on the metal (as filtered to my ears through a spruce forest). One of the eeriest, creepiest sounds/experiences I've heard/had in some time.

50 lb bags of Molasses horse feed mixed in with some cheaper cracked corn. Save up your old deep fryer oil and spray it around and make sure they track it......doesnt' take long for them to come around.

I use "no name'" brand dog food kibble and table scraps.I put it in a 45 gallon barrel strapped to a tree and apply bacon fat to everything around it.

we make fishcicles

We go to the fish market and get all the gross scraps from the vendors. Then we stick them in a five gallon pail with a lid. set them in the sun for at least a week. take them to the hunting site and hang them by the handle at a good bear height. now this is critical. stand well back and shoot holes in the bucket so the gross stuff leaks out. bears come in and stand up to lick the "popsicle". bang. call taxidermist.

There is a guy in our area who used a human body. Don't know what the bears thought of it but the Cops and the guy's he ratted out for killing the guy after he was caught disposing of it weren't happy! I see the guy almost every day on my job and I wonder how he can live with himself or if he sleeps well at night.

Wow..

I was going to say I always wanted to use the neighbour's pomeranian dipped in used fryer grease and hung in a tree so the wind would carry the scent, but that one is better

I need to slow down and read the titles more carefully.

I thought it said BEATING bears and then I got excited and was like this is going to be awesome and then I was :(

And to add something constructive, the guys at work have had great results with beaver carcasses.

Shawn

Between the 2 of us we shot 13 bears.I never saw so many pepperetts in one year.Lots of people were given the meat, none was wasted & saved a few deer & moose to boot.DAN>>>
