Baiting bears....what do you use?

One outfitter I worked with used butcher scraps, another used cherry pie filling, and another used popcorn.

Both the popcorn and the pie filling seemed to work much better than the meat.

I used to get some stuff called "10 Dead Horses" out of the US...it came in a bottle that was in a can to boot, it stunk so bad. You used it like a 'starter' to get a bucket of scraps good and ripe, as long as you kept adding scraps and water to the bucket, it kept the stink up real good.

You'd just pour some of your rotten slop mix on the ground (God help you if you got any on yourself; it would make a skunk puke!)...the bears would come and literally dig up the ground for 10' around, and 2' deep, looking for the source of the stink. Horrible stuff, but it worked better than anything else I've ever tried because the bears would stay right there and dig for hours. With a beaver carcass, they'd grab it and leave.

Another thing about bait is to make it small and hard to get. We chopped up the frozen beaver carcasses with an ax and put bits of it into a 45 gallon steel drum chained to a tree with a small hole cut into the barrel. That way the bear never got any more than a paw-ful at a time and had to stick around. Oats were another must have. They can be scattered all over the ground and the bear spends quite a bit of time licking up all the little bits.

My favorite baits for bear are popcorn, whole corn, & sweet horse feed. I use a big blue poly barrel with 1" holes drilled in the top 1/2 of the barrel. I fasten the barrel to a tree with a cable, & the bear has to roll the barrel around to get the food out. It is amazing how quickly they learn to work the barrel. The advantage of this setup is I can load the barrel & it is good for a week or so. Here is a picture of my setup.
