I was at canadian tire today trying to find some hunting ammo for my M-14. I am limited to bullet weights 168gr and lower. All they had were Remmy 150gr core-lock, Winny 168gr Balistic Silvertip, and 165gr Federal Vital Shock Serria Game King. So I bought a box of each...:D

I plan on going moose hunting this fall and would love to use the M-14 to do it. Will any of these rounds be good enough for moose?? Or will I have to get some shipped in?

I would avoid the Ballistic Silver Tip's If its solely for moose. I use them for whitetails but they act almost like a varmint bullet, the dont retain weight at all in my exierences. On a good note they seem to be very accurate. My 270 can shoot them into half inch groups and less.

Cheers!!

find somewhere that sells Federal Premium 165 gr Barnes TSX. both the GameKing and Ballistic Silvertip are a bit too soft for my like, on stuff bigger than deer. Broadside through the ribs? They'll be fine. Hit some shoulder bone? I dont wanna know

Of the 3 for moose, I'd shoot the Core-Lokt. They're proven to be good performers.

GameKings are usually good for accuracy, but I'm not sure they're stout enough for a moose.

I'd shy away from the BT's for anything but whitetails or smaller myself. My friend shot a heavy WT buck with one, quartering away and downhill at about 100 or 125 yards. The buck dropped in his tracks (which is good!) but when we dressed him, we found chunks of jacket everywhere... no base or core to be seen???

With any of those you listed, I'd still try my damndest to wait for a ribcage/boiler room shot regardless...

Is a premium bonded-bullet too strong for deer or will it do just as good as a ballistic tip?

You should be fine with a bonded bullet like the Accubond, Core-Lokt Ultra Bonded, Swift Scirroco etc. Bonded bullets are mostly designed to expand well but still hold together.

A bullet like the Trophy Bonded Bear Claw might be too tough to expand properly from what I've heard, but the others should do just great.

The last mule buck I shot went down to a 180gr Accubond in my 30-06, which was more than enough bullet... I got full penetration and lots of internal damage. He fell 5 yards from where I hit him.

I wouldn't recommend any of the the three for moose.I would prefer either a tougher bullet like the partition, accubond or tsx,or a heavier core-lokt.

The reason why I am asking is because I have a 30-06 and lots of 180 grain Accubonds and I know it penetraits deep but I was wondering if it would be too strong to accually penetrate properly.

IMO-
all metioned will do the job fine, i would use the heavier bullets.
shoot some up and see which give u the best group and get at her
if ur in the open put it threw the lungs
if ur in the bush and have to drop him in his tracks taeke out a shoulder

just my 2 cents .

You have your solution in your hands already. Use the 180 gr AB!!

It's not *too* strong. It will expand, it will penetrate, it will kill. It's a good choice even if you didnt have any on the shelf.

None of those would be my first choice. If I were limited to 168gr or less, I'd be looking at a Nosler partition or another "premium" bullet. However standing there scratching my head looking at Three boxes of ammo I'd be inclined to pick up the box of 165gr GK's and pick a broadside shot.

Here's another suggestion to use a "premium" bullet on moose, although BTs and GKs will certainly work, at least most of the time.

IF the Sierra Game King is the bullet I am thinking of, the hollow point design DID NOT feed well in my M14, I had problems with the round hanging up on the feed ramp... I'd go with ANY spitzer bullet designed for moose... A nice pointy spitzer will be simular to Full Metal Jacket ammo and not cause feed probems, imho...

Glad this was posted, I'm looking for a good Whitetail round but I'm also interested in MAYBE using my .308 on moose.

Were there accuracy problems associated with the Federal 165's? I'm going to use my M14 for whitetail and I've had poor results with the Silvertip.

Buy anything that sounds fancy..accubond , failsafe, partition, txs, fusion, chances are the moose will fall down even if you miss!

You guys have me convinced.
I'm taking the 30-30 again, with Hornady Interlocks.
Worked on the bull last year.
Premiums

Of course the chances of my shooting over 100 yards are nill.
well ya better come up were we go..your bow would be the toy to bring;)

I think you're thinking of the MatchKing. The GameKing is a soft point spitzer.
