Ballistic Silvertip or Game King?? Moose?

I use 180 gr Accubonds quite a bit for hunting and they are a great bullet indeed. I think you are just fine shooting anything from antelope to moose with this bullet, in fact I know you are as I have shot all of these animals with Accubonds cleanly and without issue.

Here is a pic of one recovered from a moose a couple of years back, if I recall correctly it had 76% wieght retention.

Not where I'd look but my friend uses his deer load for moose. 160 gr Sierra GK out of his 7mm Rem Mag.

He does just fine. I cringe but it gets the job done without a blow up this far.

I load 160-165 Game Kings for many people in 7Mag, 308win, '06 and 300 mag , etc.
Many anaimals have feen killed, most with one shot, none lost .

Are you Saying that the selection at hand is limited or are you saying that you think that your operating rod will break in half if you use a heavier bullet ?

I am saying that I don't want to damage my rifle. There is a large selection of 180gr ammo...not so much 168gr or lower.

some 4 shots for sighting in and another couple for the moose will not damage your rifle.
You still have some time to buy some good stuff. Barnes, Partition, scirocco..... the difference in grains 150 - 165- 180 is not as big as one might think - comapared to the bullet canstruction differences.

Please do not use BT for moose. We lost one because of them last year.

Gameking is allright, but I'd shed the extra money to get some good 165 TSX from Black hills.

As a side note, I considered shooting the 180 HE Federal with my M14 - with the spindle valve shut off. Is it worth it? I guess not.

Exactly. The GI manual states that bullets should be kept to 180gr and lower. Shooting 180's for the hunting season aint' so bad and you could enjoy a better factory ammo selection. If you really want to stay at 168 and lower I would go with the gameking.

Have hunted moose since 1975,have seen all manner of bullet used in both factory and handload used on some 40 kills collectively in our group of seasoned hunters and have a rule of thumb where the lightest conventional bullet is 180 gr. in 30 cal.,150 gr. in.270 cal.. Have personally dispatched some 15 moose with 165 gr. Barnes X-bullet in .300 Win.Mag.and all went down where they stood or after 2-3 steps.Have utter confidence in the Barnes on the really big boys(one went 1400 lb.)The newer Barnes Triple shock Is factory loaded also but I prefer my own handloaded equivalent. To each his own but I don't gamble when it comes to moose and have concluded that the ammo is still the cheapest aspect of a hunt that I wait all year for. Most other bullets are fine until you are too close which causes bullet break-up even from the .308 Win or when fired from a magnum that will challenge the integrety of it's construction. The universally accepted rule of thumb is to use the Nosler partition as bare minimum for moose as the bullets'ability to penetrate deep to the vitals is crucial.Lastly but more important is bullet placement as no bullet makes up for poor placement.

Partition as bare minimum ? :D

I guess that moose I shot with the 30-30 was still alive when I ate him. I used a Hornady Interlock 170FP

damn. killed my last moose with a,270win 160gr RN MV of 2300fps. range 150yrds.

must have still been alive too ;)

I strongly advise Placement over all else, but bullet construction isn't nearly as important as where you put it.

Well I just may just go out and get a box of 180gr ammunition and give it a try. I would feel better knowing that I have ammunition in the magazine I can trust 100% to get the job done. However, I did get some 150gr Super-X Silvertips(The older white box kind, not the crapy grey box) from a buddy that shoot very accurately and have taken many moose in the past.

they are the same bullet...different box design, unless you're comparing a Silvertip to a Power Point

Black Hills ammo, where is that available, and what would the approximate price be for 308 TSX load?

TIA
