Ballpark cost to re-barrel an Enfield sporter as a project?

Anyone knows the ballpark cost to re-barrel an Enfield sporter as a fun project?
Assumptions:

• I will take it to a gun-smith.
• Making it a 308.

Barrel, bolt head, magazine...gun smith. Probably cheaper to buy a 2A or DCRA conversion.

FYI rebarrelling a k98 with OEM parts ran me north of $1000

Not to mention depending on the type of sporter you have it could be dangerous to do (i.e. No. 1 Mk. 3(*), No. 5 Mk. 1, and earlier Lee Enfield variants). Only the No. 4 Mk. 1 Action would really be safe, so that has a effect as well.

Assuming you can find someone to do it...it will cost too much.

Then there's the little issues like the mag won't feed, it won't extract or eject...sigh.

Ballpark? Twice what you could sell the end result for.

I have done it. First time I used a old DCRA 308 barrel. Second time I used an old heavy target barrel. Set the chamber back an inch to get rid of the worn throat.

Since I had the barrels and 308 mags already, it did not cost much.

The next time I did I went with a 308 British. Ran a 303 Brit reamer into a 308 barrel. That way the 303 bolt and magazine work as is.

Guess there's no reasonable way to have a shooter enforcer clone.

You might be able to find one of the barrels used to set up 7.62 target rifles on No. 4 actions. This would be the closest to an Enforcer that you might get. Long, medium weight. Or, get a retired .308 target rifle barrel, set it back and fit to the No. 4 action. It would be long enough, and the contour appropriate.

Don't let money and common sense stop you! As a fun project it would be expensive but doable for most pocket books done one step at a time.

I have done some ridiculous projects with jeeps and motor cycles over the years that when finished have cost as much or more than a new one. But I did it for me for fun and not as a financial exercise.

I encourage you to have a go.

The first step, which might be the project killer even before you get started, is to find a barrel. Once you have that, you can regroup and plan out your project.

...not to mention finding someone who has the correct toolage and willingness to swap barrels without hurting the action...not as easy as you'd thnk.
