It's just a Z-Tactical handset with Kenwood 2-pin connector. Cheap airsoft handset but it works ;)

I would suggest getting your amateur radio operator license, it's good for life. But it's not required as long as you operate on public frequencies such as FRS/GMRS.

Get the USB cable and use CHIRP to program those frequencies into the radio for convenience.

Don't be afraid of the programming. There's some good sttutorials online. The tricky part is if you're programming it for duplex repeater work you have to enter the TX frequency after you program the RX frequency, tone, shift, etc...

BTW: One tip would be to upgrade the stock antenna to a "real" Nagoya Na-701 antenna, makes a world of difference!

Usable cheap radios if you use them out in the bush where there are no other strong RF signals.

Using one in an Urban environment with strong signals on adjacent bands will introduce its user to the concept of intermod
and will reveal to it's owner just how crappy these radios really are.

I can't believe that Industry Canada actually allows these cheap freeband radios into the country under the premise that they are for legit commercial use.

I have a UV5R and it cant hold a candle to the cheap Alinco that I also have.
 
These don't require a license if you use frs/gmrs frequencies, but to broadcast on pretty much any other frequency requires a license. No license and they are just complicated frs radios, so you aught to get the license. You can listen to the vhf/uhf frequencies, just not allowed to broadcast.

...with far more power, better battery life, better build quality, and much lower price than any off-the-shelf FRS radio in Canada.

Sometimes listening on those other frequencies is enough - NOAA, RCMP, FSR frequencies, etc.

Also, in an emergency situation, it might be handy to have access to all the extra frequencies - licence or no licence.

These aren't legal for use on FRS frequencies on the basis of the removable antenna alone.
 
If you use CHIRP software the programming is easy. Under the FCC rules you can only have 2 watts for FRS/GMRS, but they don't monitor the public bands much so not a big deal if in a rural area. Stay off the VHF unless you have a license.
 
The FM broadcast radio feature is nice. If you 4x4 or use FSR roads a lot, the RR frequencies (resource roads) are a must. You can put the marine frequencies in it, weather channels, Walmarts intercom ;) etc... Did I mention it has an led flashlight on it as well. Well, it does.

yeah, pretty sure these are not legal to use in FRS, because of the antenna like you say, but also the output power is too high, even the "low" setting exceeds what is permitted for FRS. On GMRS, it is also not legal in "high" tx power mode, for the same reason...likelihood of getting caught is slim, if you use only proper FRS channels at 1w TX power, but still not technically legal...i bought 2 thinking they were just regular walkie-talkies, but i assure you all they are not even close...
