BAR Buffer question.

A friend with a BAR 270 found that the buffer in his gun disintegrated and the debris clogged up the hinge on the mag floor plate. I decided to check my 30 06 and found there was no buffer at all - just the two small metal plates that it should fit between. Anybody else had a problem with their buffer and how important is it? I have no idea how long mine has been missing over the last 20 years I've been using the rifle. Thanks...Y
 
Been shooting really hot handloads or Light mag type ammo in them? they don't last long with loads like them going through it. Yes, you should have it, not critical but it was meant to be there.
 
I broke one shooting loads of slow burning powder in a 30-06 BAR. The first sign of trouble was the hinge plate not wanting to open all the way. Its a couple minute job to put in yourself.
 
Yes, you should be concerned about it. Without the buffer, the breech block carrier may develope a crack. In fact, I have seen cracks in the block itself caused by extensive shooting without the buffer in place. It has been nearly twenty years since I worked on a BAR (and I intend to avoid it for the duration) but I can recall a half dozen which were broken in this way. Regards, Bill
 
SS... The buffer fits between 2 small plates at the rear end of the action spring guide rod and the buffer is supposed to cushion the impact of the inertia piece (called the slide in the Browning manual) against the front of the receiver during the action cycle.
 
Sharp shooter...

Mine's not there so I've never seen one but I understand it is a piece of synthetic that allows a cushioning effect.
