which do you think is the better rifle? more reliable? are there any other auto's that are a step up from these two?

Interesting. I would imagine rugers 44 carbine and Deerfield would be the most reliable of all, those look like great fun!

I've had all of the above and the BARs that I've had (multiple) have been very reliable. I've had remington 742,7400,750 and the worse of all of them was a 750 in 30-06. Didn't matter what I did (thorough cleaning, changed out the magazine ) that rifle would jam at least once in every 8 rounds.

My dad had a Rem 7400 carbine in 30-06, was a handy little rifle in the woods but had terrible muzzle blast and was not what I would describe as an accurate or reliable firearm. We would experience a jam about 10-12 rounds and the last one was the kick out the door--it jammed a live round in the chamber that had to hammered out with a block of wood on the bolt handle that was then hit with a hammer to get it to move. Both dad and I said that was probably one of the scarier things we had ever done. Sold it with full disclosure after that, was happy to see it go.

The 750 was the biggest disgrace to the Remington name ever if you ask me. One of those "it's not broke but let's fix it anyway" absolute junk right from the get go. The 7400 was the best semi auto hunting rifle ever made imo, pre 2000's of course.

Take your pick or your price. Remington 7400 series or mid-2000’s 750’s were good and reliable as long as they were kept clean. They were not designed to shoot continuous or 000’s of rounds. I sighted in a friends 750 and was able to coax 1.25 MOA out of it with the old Bronze Point ammo. They were also engineered to use heavy-for-caliber bullets in order to have reliable cycling. Kind of the F-150 of semis if you will. The BAR is a little more complex in its workings, but can be pegged as better built. It’s more expensive, kind of like the Toyota Tundra of semis lol. Remington is easier to work on, but parts are becoming scare. I have an eye on a European BAR in 9.3x62mm on Tradex.
