BAR or R1 ??

R1 is a much better built Gun..

Well built for sure...

BAR's feel cheaply made in comparison.

I dissagree when you compare to the Safari model BAR.

Floor plates is stupid.

I like the floor plate...

R1 is a much better rifle in all categories. If anyone has used both and says the BAR is better built is a Browning FAN BOY.

R1 has tighter tolerances, better material used. Plain and simple, higher grade gun.

The BAR is a nice rifle, I'm not discrediting it. But the R1 is a lot nicer in all respects.

Are you kidding me???You discredited it in everything you said...

Never owned a R1, but had a chance to sight in a few..Very nice IMO..I like how easily they take down for cleaning, but nicer in all respects????

You seem to be one of those guys who say ''its better in all respects'' because that is what you have...I am willing to bet you said that about the BAR before you got the R1.

Tried to compare the two,but my closest dealer didn't have the R1 in stock.

The BAR was a nicely built rifle from what I could see and the magazine would be tolerable, but I'm not sure I like all the plastic on the new models. Although, it's usually those plastic replaced parts on the BAR that get rust issues with time.

Haven't been to the new SAIL in Vaughn yet, so I might try there.

Neither the Benelli nor the Browning will disappoint you but if you are really concerned about getting the right rifle fit I would pick up a used version of each then sell the one you like least or sell them both and buy a new version of the one you liked best.

PD Enterprises out of Edmonton has a used BAR safari in .308 for $725. Mint. Ellwood Epps has a used R1 in .308 for $850 unless it is already gone.
Prophet River has a used BAR with Redfield scope for $950. Excellent.

Have fired both... I don't really like semi rifles but you can't go wrong with either..... I am not a fan of the R1 design... too modern looking for my tastes.... but considering you said you own an x-bolt it may be right up your ally.....

Funny you should mention P&D as I did call about that rifle a few days ago. Talked to a pleasant enough fella with poor english who couldn't tell me much about the rifle and contradicted the condition of the piece from the listing, so I kind of low-balled an offer considering sight unseen, etc. The word came back from management that they're not interested in dealing...so that was that.

To follow up....It's done!

After spending a few days at my secondary residence north of TO, I dropped into Epps today and bought a Browning BAR shorttrac std in .308.

Don't mean to beat a dead horse, but I've got a few questions, mostly pertaining to the newer autos. To start, I have owned a BAR in .270 Win since 96, (s\n says its from '91) and have had poor accuracy over the last few years. Think patterns instead of groups. It got to the point I stopped taking it out hunting. Lately though, after changing the base to Leupold 1pc with Leupold rings, topping it with a VX-1 3-9 and throwing my own 130gr FB's, its now shooting under 2" at 100m at 28-2900fps.. (Factory 130 Core Lokts were wider than that) It's now a rifle I'm comfortable taking out again. It's no tack driver however, and I'm not sure how I like the fact I own a sub 200m .270 Win. I don't think it does justice to the cartridge.
To those who own newer BARs/R1s/740s, how does your rifle group at longer ranges? Do you feel comfortable at a longer shot, one that the cartridge is more than capable of making? Those with the bigger cartridges, such as .338 Win Mag, is the cartridge held back because of the rifle? Or can these newer autos hold their own?

Obviously I can't help answer that at the moment, but here's my plan for the new BAR.

Test out several different cartridges (manufacturers, weights, loads, etc.) at 100 yds,

ammo list includes:

Rem-managed recoil 125gr
Rem-Accutip or Scirocco 165gr
Hornady Match 155gr. A_MAX
Hornady SST 150gr
Win-Super-X 150 gr.

^^Suggestions for others welcome.

To use a 1.25-4x mid distance scope mounted on a rail, but also try a 3-9x perhaps.

My R1 will shoot with any other gun that I have used,or own.Took a while to get a load that was exellent, but that is usually the case.Used Winchester and Federal as brass donor, did not try Remington,as I find poor results with that .Federal blue boxes are surprising sometimes.Give them a go.

not sure how up to date this info is, but it doesn't show 308 as being available, yet.

h ttp://www.benelliusa.com/rifles/benelli-r1-rifle.php

I was considering the new BAR Shortrax European stock model in either 7mm-08 or maybe 308 when I came across this thread. Right-o-way got interested in the R1 to compare. Anyone have up to date info on the R1, pics and if my chosen cals are indeed available?

Used to come out in 308, but this year, it seems they dropped it and picked up the 338.
There should still be a new one on a shelf somewhere. No 7-08 that I've heard of.

Congrats on the new Rifle!

The sales guy at Epps told me that they have an order of the Benneli R1s coming in shortly, including .308s. I just didn't want to wait even though i did like the look and feel of the rifle on top of a price drop. The new ones will not come with the rail. Le Baron in Mississauga told me the same thing a few weeks ago as they were waiting for their order of R1s as well. So these may very well be the last .308s coming in.
