Hey, Fellas. This is my first post on this thread and I am wondering if anyone can help out my buddy? I had never heard of a civ version of a BAR but he apparently has one in .338 and wants to put a thumbhole stock on it. He has not been able to find one so I told him I would ask you guys. Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers-Randy.

A quick scan of Browning website shows no factory made thumbhole stocks for the BAR. And ive never seen an aftermarket one. He may have difficulty finding one.

IMO the BAR would look pretty strange with one.

Theres also this BAR.... (the real civvy version). My gues is your friend has one of the various models of this

being 338, he probably means the civvy version- the 'army" version is usually in'06 and somewhat hard to come by-you need a 12(2) full auto - however, i would question the wisdom of a thumbhole on a caliber like 338- that 's a somewhat "heavy ' recoiler ( some 33 pounds of recoil- over DOUBLE that of an 06) and she's just liable to snap at the upper and lower points at where the thumbhole is-

Can you snap a pic or two of the rifle in question? The BAR's currently available from Browning do not have, nor require, a "civ" designation. If it is one of the old military BAR's and has been re-configured to 338, I'd be wary to ensure that the action was also redesigned to handle that cartridge.

I know Browning made the commercial BAR in 338 Winchester Magnum, but it was not a civilian version of the military BAR. The 2 only shared the name, nothing else.

Blasted Saber and gunrunner100 are bang on. I am having trouble with the pics he sent but the on BS put up is the same. I truly don't understand why he wants to reconfigure the gun, it is quite nice like it is but he has learned to shoot with a pistol grip and so wants something like that for his civ gun. When he told me he had a BAR in .338 I told him they didn't make them in 338 so he brought it in to the shop and I made fun of him because it is NOT a BAR as Army guys think of one. It is a really good looking rifle though.
So, with the identity of the gun no longer in question, what would you fellas suggest?
-Randy
