Given good placement, I'll take it. 'course you knew I'd say that.

I've always loved that..."its taken more deer than any other gun in these parts" says the ol boys. Its also wounded more deer than any other gun in these part cause for many decades its all you guys would carry in these parts...Its not hard to claim to be the best driver in the world if your name is H Ford and your sitting in the only car in the world...I've always loved that thuddy thuddy logic. Every time I hear it I look to see if its comming out of a woman with a deep voice. Cant be commin out of a guy

Well, according to our camp records, MY 30-30 has taken more deer than any other gun in camp. By the way, until recently, it was the only 30-30 in camp.:p

Them deer must not be all jazzed up with adrenaline. If they were theyd eat that thuddy and keep trukin

Actually, most of my deer are shot running, or walking. It's nice to get those standing shots, but it rarely happens.

That is a broad statement that I'm sure applies to all of Ontario, where you guys maybe hunt shoulder to shoulder.:p

I get a deer every time I've gone out for the last 27 years and have yet to have shot one on the move.

I guess you'd say that of the bull moose it took last year too.:p

I'd sooner be doin moose or caribou undergunned than a rev'd whitetail. Come on up,will put you in front of the dogs. If you hit him after shooting over him 3 or 4 times we'll see if he's dead. lot of ifs in there hey. Almost like I've seen decades of it

bare minimum would be a .260 for me. but if I was recoil sensitive and wanted to hunt all those critters I would probably buy a .308win.
If your talkin' .260 Rem then you're gping to get more recoil from a 308 if you go up in bullet!
a 160 from the .260 Rem is not going to be that much different than a 165 from the .308, but if you go to 175 or 180 in the .308 , well, I'd stick with the ,260and a 140!!

I think it is not the caliber but the hunter who is shouldering the rifle. A .243 in the right hands is all one needs if one is willing to pick his/her shots. I would far sooner have a person backing me who is the boss of a .243 than a person with a .338 who is the mayor of flinch city.

Well, for me, I do not have enough confidence in the 243 to get the job done. I have moderate confidence in the 6.5x55, 260, and 30-30, and good confidence in the 7mm08, 270 and 280. Beyond that (at sub-300yd ranges) I'd consider everything bigger to be equal.

I personally wouldn't shoot a bear or an elk with anything under a 180 grain bullet. Wouldn't hunt with anyone shooting anything under 150gr for the above mentioned game, on Moose and deer though it's a different story, competency comes from experience, shoot what your comfortable and what gives you success.

:)

I was recently elected to this rare and singular position. The baseplate of my .35 Whelen wasn't closing properly so about half the times I pulled the trigger it exploded open and tossed cartridges all over the place. Ended up with a flinch that would make a spastic blush...

BUT about this question... assuming premium bullets, reasonable shot distance, and reasonable shot placement, the bare minimum is a .243/6mm. The big comfortable part of the graph where you've got lots of margin for mistakes starts at the .270 IMHO.

The old 44-40, with all it's pathetic (by modern standards) ballistics has also taken all the game you listed. But I wouldn't use it on anything larger than deer, unless I was in a survival situation.

As already mentioned, so has the 22 rimfire. I guess it comes down to what you would feel comfortable with as minimum.

I'd take the 30-30 over the 243 any day. :)
So has the 303 british!!
