Hello fellow cgners. Looking at getting my first pistol and torn between a baretta 92fs and a 1911 (prob a ruger sr1911) and can't decide. Both seem to be highly customizable and in my price range of nothing more than 1000 bucks. Which would you guys say is a better target puncher? I'm new to handguns other than my gsg1911 and fathers glock (glock is good pistol but doesn't fit my beefy hands even with all the inserts). Thanks guys!

PS im open to other good/better pistols for target shooting in my price range other than glocks

Check out the CZ75B as well.
Can't really go wrong with any of these.
Keep the cost of ammo in mind (read 9mm is cheaper)

The 1911 is a better paper puncher(IMO), than a M 92, but more costly to shoot. CZ Shadow seems to be a popular and accurate 9mm.
I have a CZ 85 Combat, which is accurate and reliable, plus I have the Kadet for cheap .22 practise.

How is a FS92 customizable? You can't even change the front sights on one. 1911 platform is great! If the Glock doesn't fit your beefy hands, how was the GSG? If you liked that, then how about a 1911 in 9mm? You get a 1911 style and get to shoot cheaper 9 mm ammo. Win, win situation! The 92 and 1911 have completely different operating systems. You already have experience with the GSG, so go with the 1911

Traded my Remington 1911 for a Beretta M9..I prefer the Beretta because it fits 'my hand' more comfortably, where a 1911 may fit 'you' better. Best thing to do is handle both.

Gsg 1911 was alright and I've gotten to hold both 1911 and 92fs so I know I like the grip far more. Tho I'm gonna check out a cz before I make any decisions. Might not be most customizable but if it tickles my fancy might have to go that route. Thanks for info so far guys and keep em coming!

A friend of mine let me shoot his 'omni trigger' CZ, and it was awesome!!..Not sure which model it was. But man, so comfortable and smooth.

Ya I wanna stay 9mm for price and when I head home can steal few box's from the old man....you know so it doesn't sit there for too long and goes bad.

My 92FS was more accurate than my current 5" STI 1911
Beretta ran strong 13K rounds without a single failure, was well taken care of. (I sold it at this mileage)
It's in 9mm so easier on the wallet to feed than a .45 (your 1911 choice)
No or very little custom parts available, this means for slow accurate shooting it's great, if you start action shooting games you would enjoy the customization hence why i sold the 92FS and moved towards 1911.
I wish i had the budget to own both, i will get a new 92Fs someday and enjoy it, but is currently not practical for IPSC

if you really want a customizable pistol, 1911 is the best platform and springfield range officer is one of the option but I feel something is missing shooting a 9mm on 1911 platform.

If you're thinking about a 92 or an M9. Consider the Girsan Lineup. I've never fired a real beretta, but I've handled both. and I like the feel of my Girsan better than the Beretta. I also managed to get a compact model with a rail, which isn't really a standard option with the Berettas, at least not that I've seen.

The price of a new girsan, same price as a used (300/500 rounds) beretta on the EE, just sayin...
While copies do run good most of the time, i am the type that buys and resells alot, and originals always sell faster.

Get a Beretta, bought an M9 3 month ago and do not regret it, yes Girsan are a bit cheaper and look very similar they are differences.
Stick with the real mckoys, easy to get parts, and fit and finish is better and alot easier to resell a quality firearm if needed.

I have both a 1911 and a Beretta i find that even though the Beretta is much larger in the hand it just feels better.

Every Beretta 92F part fits the Girsan, so parts are not an issue.
Full size and compact Girsan with no rail run $450 or so new, haven't seen a used Beretta for that price on the EE yet. Plus no plastic on the Girsan which is a bonus.
You could get a Girsan 9mm and a SAM 1911 in .45 for under $1k total for both....

I would go to a gun shop and play with a Beretta 92 and a 1911 they have in stock. You are far better off making the decision based on your limited experience with one, then what we tell you about them. Make your decision based on what one feels best in your hand and makes your junk move the most. As they are both excellent pistols in their own regards, soliciting us for recommendations of which one is better is a futile act.

If you are a true Gun Nut, in the end, you will end up eventualy buying both. No pistol collection will be complete without both anyways.

The logical answer is get both as no collection can be complete without either. Get the 9mm 92 first as it will be cheaper than .45 to play with
