baretta 92 or a 1911

My first hand gun was a colt 1911 45acp. Love that gun and I always will. She gets pricey to feed so I got into reloading... Bought a Lee autoloading press that is more hassle then the saving.

I will eventually buy a FS 9mm. It will nicely match my CX4storm 9mm. More mags more fun:)

I went with Sig for my 9mm.

If you look at the pros and con's I would probably say go with the Beretta to start. Both are classic designs and great shooters.
9mm is cheaper to shoot
it holds 10 rnds instead of 8
FS platform is easier to clean not to mention easier to instal a 22lr exchange kit for it.
The FS mags are interchangeable with the CX4 storm if you find yourself in the market for a PCC that can hold 10 rds.
Not to mention that Beretta is the oldest gun manufacturer.

Plus you can. Always by the 45 next :)

Gsg 1911 was alright and I've gotten to hold both 1911 and 92fs so I know I like the grip far more. Tho I'm gonna check out a cz before I make any decisions. Might not be most customizable but if it tickles my fancy might have to go that route. Thanks for info so far guys and keep em coming!

Sorry but I'm a little confused. A GSG is the same size as a 1911 since it is patterned after that gun. So the grip on a 1911 is going to be the same as you have with the GSG. If the gun you held felt fatter then it was what is commonly called a "2011" which is a 1911 style upper with a double stack magazine in the required fatter and more boxy grip frame.

If your hands are too big to hold a Glock well even with the biggest grip filler then you WILL like the Beretta 92fs. They don't come much fatter than the 92.

I can't understand this "grip" issue that some people have. I have small hands but long fingers. I have no trouble at all with any handgun grip. From skinny Ruger Mk. IIs, 1911s, big S&W target grips, HK P7 long but thin and hard grips, fat VP70 ( these were really fat as they held 18 rds back in the old days), , Glocks, Berettas and tiny J frame Smith grips plus many more in between. I firmly ( no pun intended!) believe that if you understand how to grip a gun properly, all grips will feel normal after a few rounds.
It's like driving a car. You may not like the shifter, the seat position or placement of the controls but a week with the same car and the issues don't seem so bad anymore.

until you hop back in your truck and wonder why you put up with that other vehicle for week lol. but in all seriousness if i gotta tweek myself to fit the pistol then maybe its not the "right" pistol for me is what i think allot of people mean when they say it doesnt "fit" their hands. but to each their own. but none the less thanks guys for the tips and info so begins the endless hours of reading and shopping lol.

There was a reason why the US military and majority of law enforcement organizations switched from the 1911 to the 92fs. Both has been tested to death and arguments made for both camps and the Beretta won out. This is not to say that the 1911 is a slouch because it was the US military's choice as a personal side arm until Beretta came along. Military opinion might not mean anything to you and you might just truly like the style and design of one firearm over the other. I say, go with what you like. I own Berettas because I am fascinated with the companies 500 year history and their innovated approach to firearms.

Both pistols are awesome and soon I will have my greatest 1911 but still I can't stop dreaming of Beretta 92 Combat on my possession. When I`m done with 1911, I`ll start building a Beretta family from M9, M9A1 inox to italian 92FS. I just hate beretta plastic parts on their new production.

You can't go wrong. 1911 will be more complicated to disassemble and re-assemble and generally more expensive to run (45 ACP is well...crazy expensive these days). It may be slightly less reliable, but nonetheless it's a great platform. Beretta 92...well, new ones 92a1 will offer you easy sights replacement option, reliability, smoothness and accuracy that are difficult to duplicate in handgun's world. However, because of the big grip, not everyone likes it. Trigger reach may be difficult for someone with the smaller hand, but in my experience 92 may very well be the most reliable pistol ever made. Again, you can't go wrong with either. Good luck!

Get both lol...no collection is complete without a Beretta 92F/M9 and a Colt M1911-A1 .45

but if youre only getting one, maybe the Beretta 92, Amazing pistol, and much cheaper on 9mm ammo, fun to shoot, and ###Y as hell ;)

Me personally, although the Beretta M9 is my all time favorite pistol....that Massive All American .45 ACP lobbing out a 230 grain hardball just makes my knees weak thinking about it lol. A Colt Government .45 or Glock 21 3rd gen with factory night sights would be my choice.

Good luck on your selection ;)

Personally I love the 92FS, I can shoot it very accurately and comfortably and I don't even have large hands. I do highly recommend upgrading with the metal parts kit (not hard to get from Stoeger in Canada). Once you have the metal trigger, you can swap out the mousetrap trigger spring for a Wolff trigger spring, and of course the D hammer is a nice improvement too. Thinner alloy grips and target rear sight have made it a joy to shoot every trip to the range.

But what the others have said is absolutely true... try out as many different pistols as you can, and find what you fall in love with. 1911s are awesome. Glocks are awesome. CZs are awesome. Guns are awesome :)

Go with a 92FS! 100% reliable and easy to maintain/take down.

My first pistol was a Beretta, 1911 is easier to shoot well than DA/SA. but factory .45 ammo is expensive!!

How is a FS92 customizable? You can't even change the front sights on one. 1911 platform is great! If the Glock doesn't fit your beefy hands, how was the GSG? If you liked that, then how about a 1911 in 9mm? You get a 1911 style and get to shoot cheaper 9 mm ammo. Win, win situation! The 92 and 1911 have completely different operating systems. You already have experience with the GSG, so go with the 1911

Start with the 92A1 if you want to change the sights. There are a number of options available.

Some of the other mods I have done to mine (with at least 5000 rds through it, and now feels better than new):
-replaced the captive plastic recoil spring to a fluted steel guide rod and stock 13# recoil spring
-stock 20# hammer spring changed to the D model 16# spring (noticeable DA pull difference)
-stock trigger changed to a Wilson Combat short reach steel trigger (different ergonomics than the original, good for my hands).

There are a few other mods out there, such as low mass competition trigger sets and 13# competition hammer springs, skeleton hammers, etc. So you can spend lots of bucks on customization. Which platform is better? Try before you buy. I'll never sell my Beretta but now I want a 1911 too :)
