Hi all

i have a Baretta Al390 which I love. It's accurate, light, well balanced, eats even the cheapest light target loads without a hiccup, and is downright ###y.

My one qualm with the gun is the sound that the cycling of the action makes when i have it shouldered. It is a loud metallic clanking which is louder then the report of the shell itself. I shoot traps so I hear it alot in a day

My question: is there an effective way to dampen the action sound? I already have a soft recoil pad...would a cheek pad help?

I'm really leaning towards getting a break action o/o but would love to keep this one.

Any advice appreciated

Have you compared it to other or similar models from the same maker? I've owned a 390 and have a couple of 391s and didn't notice the action sound to be any worse than other guns. I wouldn't be concerned unless there is a noticeable scraping sound in which case I'd make sure the action bar were properly lubed. Beretta semi-automatic shotguns do not like to be shot dry.

I have shot a 390 for years and when I switch from an O/U I hear the first couple cycles and then no longer notice anything. The above suggestion is a good place to start.

Thanks guys. Claybuster, everything is functioning and sounding as it should...im just being a fusspot and whining about the sound. Having said that, I believe when the breach is closed and ready to fire the gas piston has an inch or so of free travel between the gas port and where it connects to the action bar This is normal but I bet the free travel creates a bit more of a sound when the fast moving piston suddenly suddenly slams into the action bar

I notice that similar noise on my 303 but only when I'm wearing ear defenders. I guess they take away the low frequency sounds of a gunshot more than the high frequency metallic sound. You definitely don't notice in the field!
