The wife and I had to wait for a doe to move on away from the platform we hunt from. (We don't have antlerless tags so we kept it legal). Finally the doe took off after many minutes of us in the same open field as the doe and 100-150 yards away. As she went bounding through the bush at the edge of the field she let out some barks like a dog.
After we were settled in the stand a couple of other does came into the field 250 yards away and browsed to within 150 yards of us. The other doe barking earlier on didn't seem to have affected them. After watchng them for 30 minutes they left after something other than us spooked them.
Has anyone else heard a white tail deer bark like this?

i think its a warning to their young there is something not nice in the area.

when i was out last year they got nose of me in the ground blind and they were barking. after they did that i just packed up and went home.

maybe the deer have a signal for the scent of a human, they associate that smell with death and bark. cou:

YES, several times. l was still hunting a few years ago and heard what sounds like a high pitched, raspy sounding "bark". Several weeks later I was watching something on TV (Nat Geographic or some other outdoor show) and there they had a short film of a deer making the sound I heard while hunting. Just a few days ago I heard the sound again while I was still hunting through some swampy stuff. As I approached the area the sound came from, 2 deer busted out of the thick bush. I wouldn't have associated the sound as coming from a deer but as mentioned, I did see it on an outdoor show.

One time I was outside talking with some friends. It was dark and we heard a whistling sound coming from the bush. It honestly sounded like a dentist's drill, just whizzing. Days later I saw a doe near the same spot and it was making the same noise. Was it trying to scare us off both times? Or did it just breathe funny?
