Barnaul 308 consistent? Or not?

Shopping around for 308 bulk ammo for my Sig Cross is a sobering experience. These are my choices…
- Barnaul steel with poly coating (80c/rd)
- PMC or Federal brass ($1.1/rd)

I don’t want to be frustrated with inconsistency, so I’m guessing either of the Brass options are worth the extra expense?

The Barnaul I bought has some serious variation in the tip/ogive of the projectile. It looks like it was poured by hand it’s so ugly. I haven’t fired any other than offhand at a gong at medium range but I would not count on it for any kind of precision.

Are you planning to shoot long distance or get into PRS with your new rifle?

Factory match ammo is pricey but it will give you the performance and accuracy that the rifle was designed to provide.

The $ spent on the rifle and accessories are just the start:;)

good (match) ammo is going to cost you. Sometimes you get lucky and find some of the cheaper stuff that your rifle will shoot well, or at least shoot good enough. I can get 1.25 to 1.5 moa with my RPR with federal 150 gr fmj. Won't win any matches with it but I can ring a 10" steel plat at 600 meters with it no problem.

I'm not ready to drop cash on a full reloading setup but I've been thinking about the lee loader for .308. You need to use brass fire formed in your chamber because it only does neck sizing. Might be a cheap way to make some good ammo. Id buy what brass ammo you can get cheap right now and start saving brass. $51 in stock @ budget shooter supply.

The Sig isn't a cheap rifle. I wouldn't hesitate to get setup to reload. The true potential of any rifle isn't achieved until you dive into reloading. The garbage savage rifles I had in the past never saw a factory round. Handloads from day 1. It's worth it

Barnaul is good enough for a semi-auto service rifle, but it's not a precision ammo. However, it's not as bad as people think either. Here's a video from Kalashnikov testing their new tactical bolt action rifle, he is shooting 4-shot groups at 100 m with Barnaul .308 (starts at roughly 2 minutes mark):

Garbage in-Garbage out. Buy a reloading kit and some good components. If you want to shoot factory ammo buy some Federal GMM. However for the price of a few cases of good factory match ammo, you could be well on your way to a very nice reloading kit.
