just bought some Barnaul fmj non corrosive ammo for my newly bought tula sks. i want to know if anyone used this ammo in an sks, what did you think about it, did you like it or not. I've never used steel cased ammo to begin with, I've heard mixed reviews, anyways, looking to go shoot my new sks and this ammo!

Just started using it, 500 rounds for $179. Great ammo so far, zero issues and accurate.

Its all I've used in my SKS so far. It seems every store has them - even Canadian Tire. 325 rounds and the only problem was one failure to feed, but I think that was my buddy holding onto the bolt handle while chambering a round, not anything to do with the ammo.

I use Barnaul and Czech surplus pretty much exclusively. Ballistics as close to identical as doesn't count. I use the Czech when I'm planning on really burning through a pile (cost) and the Barnaul on days when I know I might not have a chance to clean within 24 hours. Really good stuff.

I also recently saw a vid on why you have to worry less about steel cased ammo with 7.62x39 as opposed to .223/556 NATO. It has to do with 7.62x39 having a slightly deeper and wider groove at the base for the ejector to grab hold of, which makes for a more solid purchase to overcome the slightly stiffer case extraction. Lacquered cases are as "slick" as brass, but because they deform less easily, they press up against the chamber somewhat more. Also, 7.62x39 is slightly tapered whereas 5.56 NATO is not, so as soon as the case is drawn even slightly back it is disengaged from the chamber wall, whereas 5.56 NATO's straight cylindrical design means that it is in contact with the chamber wall until it is fully extracted.

I should have bookmarked it. It was an elegant explanation of something I'd wondered about, and explains why the East Block has stuck with steel cased ammo (cheaper) and yet their weapons still have such an excellent reputation for reliability.

No issues with it whatsoever. Accuracy about the same as milsurp stuff but non-corrosive and club-legal (my club banned steel core ammo). All I shoot out of the SKS for now.. Will have to hit Silverdale to burn through some of my remaining milsurp, though.

Ran some Barnaul through the SKS this afternoon, actually. Performed exactly the same as the Surplus stuff.

I'm happy with it, for sure.

I grab a few boxes of this every payday when I do my gun store walk throughs. Use it for short plinking sessions when I won't have time for a good clean right away, the Czech surplus comes out for extended shoots. Accuracy seems acceptable, I can ring the 200 yd gong pretty regularly with it and open sights.

I would. Cleaner than surplus.

Yes, well we are talking about non-corrosive, not surplus. I have tons of Barnaul and have shot lots of it. As far as NC goes, it's dirty. In fact, I get residue on my shooting glasses after shooting 60-100 rounds. With that said, nothing against it, it's all I shoot. Decent accuracy and great price. But it's a far cry from clean compared to other brands of NC 7.62x39.

I've been shooting both their zinc plated and lacquer coated ammo through my cz527 carbine and the lacquered is at least 300% more accurate...price is the same and never had any issue as long as i cleaned the barrel at least every 3-400 rounds(preferably every 200)...got this russian sks that shoots both equally "well" so ill use up my zinc plated ones with that one-whats interesting is that the sks does not seem to loose accuracy even after 600 rounds without cleaning...im tempted to keep shooting it to see how far it can go.

Barnaul has been the most accurate commercial ammo I've been able to find so far for both of my SKS', quite a bit more accurate for me than PPU, MFS or American Eagle.

It runs smoothly in my SKS with no problems and I can reliably ring a 2/3 scale (12"x20") IPSC plate at 220m with it. Averages 2330 fps.
