Does anyone have any info or experience with the Russian made Barnaul FMJ 7.62 -39 ammo . It says on the box non-corrosive , but at our local Canadian Tire , it sells for 10 bucks for 20 , whereas the MFS brand ammo is nearly 17 dollars for twenty.....is the Barnaul ammo any good ?.....thanks

So I finally got a chance to shoot some of this ammo and holy smokes is it ever dirty. I shot 25 rounds and my SKS was the dirtiest I've ever seen it, even after shooting many more rounds :sok2

What other types of 7.62-39 ammo have you used , how accurate was this Barnual stuff ; have you ever used the MFS brand ?

Found I could ring a 10" gong at 200 yards offhand pretty consistantly with the irons, so it can't be that bad. (Barnaul) I've only used the 762x54 MFS, but it performed well.

I was under the impression that Barnaul and MFS are pretty much the same just different name/packaging. As for the accuracy I was shooting 100 yards with iron sight on a cold windy day and I wasnt able to retrieve my target but from what I could see with my binoculars it was decent. I'll try to add some more info on my next range trip. I was using the Non-Cor Norinco stuff prior to this, I still have around 1100 rounds left but I found this Barnaul stuff for $150 per 500 so I grabbed 1000 rounds. I really like the Norinco and it seems to be much cleaner than the Barnaul.

Not sure if they're from the same factory or not. All the MFS I ever used was steel case. The Barnaul was brass or copper wash. It's definitely not the cleanest burning ammo on the block, but I like it for times when I won't be able to do a full corrosive clean right after shooting.

Wholesale Sports has it for $7 /20.
Only MFS I've seen has been soft point. Someone I know took a deer with that round at approx 70 yrds

I just picked up a spam can of Russian 7.62x39, did some research on the head-stamp (17/66) and it looks like its from the Barnaul factory circa 1966. I assumed it was corrosive when I bought it. Any chance it might not be? Most of what I'm reading on the inter-webs says the ammo from Barnaul was some of the better quality stuff.

when it's that old, assume it's corrosive. not likely cleaning it will hurt it.

Barnaul is very good stuff, but the stuff you are describing is corrosive.
