Barnaul fmj vs ppu bluine FMJ

So I still have a big crate of steel case laquered barnaul 123gr FMJ and I recently bought a stash of ppu blueline 123gr FMJ for the brass as I will start reloading for my beloved sks.

Went to the range yesterday and shot about 100 round of each and was very surprised to see the barnaul perform consistently better than the ppu.

Barnaul average 5 rng group size at 100 yardwas about 2.75 MOA with the best 5 round group beibg an honest 1.1 MOA.

PPU average group size was consistently around 50% bigger than barnaul with a 4 MOA average at 100 yard.

PPU being more expensive I always figured it was better ammo but these results seem to say otherwise.

Also HUGE POI SHIFT between the 2 ammunition even though they are both 123gr FMJ , about 6 MOA elevation and 6 MOA windage shift.

probably not same powder charge and burn speed ?


What has been your experience with barnaul and ppu ? Did you guys get similar results ?

I did not, I don't want to go down that rabbit hole as I think I would have to :

A) compare bullet design and BC

B) compare weight average of each type

C) check powder weight and consistency

D) compare powder burn weight. I have no knowledge of russian powders and primers and PPU probably uses Homegrown stuff as well so not sure what I could make of it.

What did you have in mind?

I was only referring to comparison of the bullets themselves -- the actual projectiles.

I'm not a re-loader myself, so I was curious if you had any info about the shape of the projectiles.
 
I've had pretty good results with PPU and Barnaul. 5 MOA is what the sks was designed for. And with my current eyesight, 5 MOa is a GREAT day.

So, if you're getting a 4MOA with PPU and 1.1- 2.75 moa with Barnaul, it's probably a lot more than just bullet shape, type of powder and load.

Obviously you've fine tuned your shooting technique.

It will be interesting to see how much you can tighten up the groupings.
 
PPU 7.62x39 is my go to for my CZ 527. It consistently shoots moa to the same POA as both Hornady SSTs and S&B soft points. Maybe you got an off lot or perhaps there's a bullet diameter difference or powder difference that your rifle favors. Either way, I'd be pleased if my SKS shot the cheapest of the cheap that well!

I use a Timbersmith stock That I bedded. Tuned the trigger as best as I could and put a kwikrail on top with a 3-18 vortex scope. makes it a lot easier with sandbags as well.

Only barnaul. I remeber having betetr results with barnaul than with Lake city 149gr 7.62NATO in my m14. Maybe barnaul is underrated?
 
Measure bullet diameters on both. I bet one would be .311" and the other .308"

Soviet 7.62mm is .311 inch. Barnaul is made to the same spec as SKS barrel was.
 
I had good luck with the PPU round nose soft points , not such good luck with the Ppu pointed soft points. Round nose would shoot sub 2 inch groups (5 shots) at 100 meters. The pointed soft points would shoot groups double the size.
That was out of my ‘53 Tula sks. Try the ppu round nose soft points you might have better results with those.
