Looking to load up some 168 TTSX projectiles for deer hunting in the 300 win mag. Too much for deer? Will it expand? In and out like a FMJ? Distance will likely be under 200 yards with the possibility of up to 300-350.

Would like to hear from anyone who has experience with the Barnes 165/168 from a 30cal magnum on deer sized game.

100% fine, browning bar mk2 300 wsm here. this is all I use (deer, moose, black bear) most of my deer kills are within 50 yards, 30 even. rule of thumb is you need 2000 fps up

It wasn’t the TTSX exactly but I did use the 168 grain TSX a fair bit in a Weatherby Mark V Ultra lightweight that I rebarrelled to 300 Win. Killed more than a few things with it over a few years and at least 3 continents. Very accurate, insane penetration, and slow killing.

The slow killing part doesn't sound great. Would you attribute that due to small exit wounds or something else?

i think the same issue happened with the previous barnes x and barrenground caribou while i guided: if the bullet is not meeting any big bone(s) it is not expanding and will just pencil and if any organs are touched like heart, lungs or liver the outcome will be the dead but might take longer. 5 hours later for one liver hit ...

The t-tsx will expand on a deer chest shot. They just do not do the damage that a plain old sp does. They work better faster. They will kill, sometimes they just do the 50 yard death run.

Or further one was 150yards and no blood trail. Few drops
Size of a pen head. Second was over 300 before lost trail and never found even after laying on the ground after the shot. Was short brl 308. Only use for coyotes now
