barnes Reloading manual for newbie

Hi, I am looking at jumping into the reloading game and need a little advice on manuals. I want to start reloading for my 300 win mag with barnes tsx because I want to try using all copper bullets for meat hunting. would it be best to get a barnes manual or will the speer one be just as good? I have also noticed it's best to have two manuals to use to compare... so if I buy the rockchucker kit then bought a second manual I should just get the Barnes if I can find it..? I looked at their web site and it gave me a recipe of 65gr.-71gr. of IMR4831 powder with a 180 gr. TSX. Does this sound like a good place to start for a moose load? I still have nothing but a shelf full of spent cases and an eagerness to learn.
Sorry for all the questions might have to head down the road to Vancouver and find a store to look at all this stuff and chat their ear off.
 
I guess that if you are going to use their bullets, their manual would be one to get, otherwise it's pretty hard to beat the Lyman 49th, they are not trying to sell you bullets.

Barnes has some reloading data on their website but it is no where near as complete as their manual. It is important to note that there are some differences in using monolithic bullets to cup and core especially where it comes to seating bullets. Good luck with your new hobby.
 
wow those hodgdon and barnes load data pages are great! Thanks fs and hf. All those powders to choose from... What to use. what are good ones to start with?

Same here, with varying results.

Sierra answered my question in two days: sent a pdf of my cartridge load data and answered my questions about bullet expansion velocities.

Hornady was much less helpful - two weeks for an answer, no load data, and gave me the same optimal expansion velocity for both a 180gr roundnose and a 150gr spitzer:confused:. I really didn't think that I should try to push that 180gr to 2700-2900fps with my .303Brit.:D
 
Buy a subscription to Loaddata.com - it has loaddata from virtually everyone located in one convenient place. Not only that, you have access to reloading tips, hints, etc from the articles tab (many of these articles come directly from Handloader Magazine).

I know the data is accurate - I have a copy of the Barnes #4 manual, .pdf portions of Barnes #3, and the Nosler 6 manual. The data on the loaddata.com site referencing these three manuals is exactly the same as the data in my hardcopies.
