Hey,

Well I wanted to post some results of my range session today in case other people were wondering. These are 168gr Barnes Tipped TSX that were being shot out of my Remington 700 XCR chambered in 300WM at various speeds as I was trying out different loads at 100yards. Seemed to be fairly accurate but what I found intersting is how they mushroomed. Barnes claims the have great weight retention so I thought I'd post my results. I managed to pull 7 bullets from the berm. Cleaned them off and heres what I got. Below each picture is the weight of the bullets and percentage of retained weight.

Bullet 1: 159.2gr - 95%
Bullet 2: 119.5gr - 71%
Bullet 3: 140.4gr - 84%

Bullet 1: 161.9gr - 96%
Bullet 2: 166.1gr - 98.8%
Bullet 3: 163.1gr - 97%
Bullet 4: 166.9gr - 99.3%

So the one that mushroomed best had the best weight retention but I was surprised how some came appart.

What do you guys think?

I know I'll be loading these for hunting. Best group seemed to be with 68gr of IMR4350 at about 1"or so at 100 yards. I'm not looking for sharpshooter accuracy, I just want above average hunting accuracy.:sniper:

I think your not hunting berms or anything remotely like them.

I've recovered the 168 gr version of the regular TSX from first a very large moose, then a Zebra and lastly a kudu and all three looked like the Barnes ads and sort of like you last bullet in the second pic. All three were over 165 grs when I weighed them.

Chuck is right, the sand is far harder on the petals than the insides of an animal of any size.

TSXs blow up the same in dirt and sand but they don't in critters. I wouldn't read anything into your test but that they aren't designed to shoot berms.
