Barnes Varmint Grenades

I picked up a box of these in .224 50 gr for use in my Rem 700 .220 Swift. But now, reading the box label I see it says "for 1 in 10" twist or faster". I think the swift is 1 in 14" or so. Has anyone tried these in this cartridge? I guess I was supposed to get the 36gr. pills instead

The extra speed from the Swift may just give you the RPM that you need to stabilize them. The only way to be sure is to load a few up and punch some paper.

I tholught about trying them in my 223 SAN Black Special. Would make a wicked Black Rifle Gopher load if they work.

The 50gr varmint grenade would not stabilize in a 1 in 12" twist Sako 223 that I tried them in, and they weren't all that great in my 1 in 9" twist CZ.

tried them in both my black special and stevens 200, both .223 and was way underimpressed, not very accurate, and definetly not the big splatter i was hoping for.

Wasn't very impressed with the 50gr in my 1in9 Savage .223. Not all that accurate.

I've had some good results with Nosler BT for varmints. Very accurate, and barely any pelt damage on coyotes. They don't even exit but they make a mess inside.

I haven`t tried the 50gr. VG but the 36gr VG didn`t expand properly in my 222. gave 1/2 box to a buddy to try in his 223. no results yet.

Same result here in a 5.56 chamberered AR15 and in a .223 Wylde match AR15 upper. Both 1:9 twist 16inch barrels.

The 36g ones are very accurate in my .223 with 1-9" twist. But even at 3500 fps they really are not that impressive.

I'm glad to read this post. Had trouble with 55 grain bullets in my Thompson, thought I would try some 50's. But, now maybe I'll skip them.(shoots real good with 45 grain pills)

Its got a 1:12 twist which I thought was a little slow, but the Rem 700 has a 1:14.

It appears I have bought a box of lemons. Wish I had asked here first Well, nothing for it now but to load some up and see what happens. Maybe the Swift's extra HP will make a difference. I will definitely let you all know. I have been using Nosler 40gr varmint ballistic tips with good results, but was curious to try something different. This is the first time I have tried Barnes bullets. Hopefully the poor performance noted here is not typical of their whole product line
